The Ro1 model of hydrocephalus represents an excellent model for studying the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus due to its complete penetrance and inducibility, enabling the investigation of the earliest cellular and histological changes in hydrocephalus prior to overt pathology. Hematoxylin and eosin staining, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy were used to characterize the histopathologic...

Excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain is a condition known as hydrocephalus. It may cause a life-threatening increase in intracranial pressure (ICP). Nonsurgical treatment of hydrocephalus includes continuous CSF drainage, repetitive lumbar punctures (Lim et al., 2009), or osmotic diuretics such as mannitol or glycerol, but their effects are transient and limited. Sur...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hydrocephalus is a frequent complication following subarachnoid hemorrhage. Few studies investigated the association between laboratory parameters and shunt-dependent hydrocephalus. This study aimed to investigate the variations of laboratory parameters after subarachnoid hemorrhage. We also attempted to identify predictive laboratory parameters for shunt-dependent hydroc...

A patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome presented with hydrocephalus secondary to intraventricular hemorrhage. Fusion of the cervical vertebrae may have impeded cerebrospinal fluid flow. Change in the properties of cerebrospinal fluid flow after hemorrhage may have induced noncommunicating hydrocephalus. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy was effective for the treatment of hydrocephalus associated w...

Management of hydrocephalus is the most beneficial indication for endoscopy. To cure hydrocephalus and thereby render an individual shunt independent is a great achievement. The standard and the most commonly performed endoscopic procedure is endoscopic third ventriculostomy. However, the field of neuroendoscopy is prepared to extend itself beyond just the ventriculostomy procedure. The neuroen...

A patient had severe hydrocephalus and diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement on MR which mimicked leptomeningeal spread of a primary brain tumor. The leptomeningeal enhancement resolved completely after decompression of the hydrocephalus. Data suggest that the leptomeningeal enhancement is caused by vascular stasis induced by the hydrocephalus.

Because diagnostic criteria for normal pressure hydrocephalus have not been clearly determined, it is often difficult to differentiate patients with this potentially treatable condition from those with Alzheimer-type dementia. We have studied three patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus, 17 patients with Alzheimer-type dementia, and seven healthy elderly controls using positron emission to...

Obstructive hydrocephalus is a neurological emergency that needs to be immediately identified and treated. It very rarely resolves without treatment. We report about an 86-year-old man with right frontal stroke who developed obstructive hydrocephalus caused by blood in the cerebral aqueduct. The patient had sudden and immediate clinical improvement and a repeated head computed tomography (CT) s...
