Contrasting patterns of X-linked vs. autosomal diversity may be indicative of the mode of selection operating in natural populations. A number of observations have shown reduced X-linked (or Z-linked) diversity relative to autosomal diversity in various organisms, suggesting a large impact of genetic hitchhiking. However, the relative contribution of other forces such as population bottlenecks,...

BACKGROUND Mouse urinary allergens are an important cause of occupational asthma in animal facilities. Domestic exposure to mouse allergens is a risk factor for asthma among inner-city residents. OBJECTIVE We sought to develop a sensitive and specific assay for assessing environmental mouse allergen exposure. METHODS An ELISA for recombinant (r)Mus m 1 was developed by using rabbit polyclon...

We used a large panel of pedigreed, genetically admixed house mice to study patterns of recombination rate variation in a leading mammalian model system. We found considerable inter-individual differences in genomic recombination rates and documented a significant heritable component to this variation. These findings point to clear variation in recombination rate among common laboratory strains...

Analysis of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome cases in Zibo City, China, during 2006-2014 showed that it occurred year-round. Peaks in spring and fall/winter were caused by Hantaan and Seoul viruses, respectively. Rodent hosts were the striped field mouse for Hantaan virus and the brown rat and house mouse for Seoul virus.

The manner in which an animal's environment is furnished may have significant implications for animal welfare as well as research outcomes. We evaluated four different housing conditions to determine the effects of what has been considered standard rodent enrichment and the exercise opportunities those environments allow on disease progression in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse model. F...

The mouse gammaretroviruses associated with leukemogenesis are found in the classical inbred mouse strains and in house mouse subspecies as infectious exogenous viruses (XRVs) and as endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) inserted into their host genomes. There are three major mouse leukemia virus (MuLV) subgroups in laboratory mice: ecotropic, xenotropic, and polytropic. These MuLV subgroups differ in...
