The editor of the Lancet, Richard Horton, an articulate critic of much of modern medicine, gave a keynote address at the 2001 Society for Clinical Trials annual meeting, provocatively entitled, "The clinical trial: deceitful, disputable, unbelievable, unhelpful, and shameful-what next?" Horton (2001) suggests that the clinical trial process is approaching a critical moment, with growing public ...

In this book, Dr. Rollin shows that there is a group (composed almost entirely of chronic schizophrenics) who do extremely badly after their discharge from mental hospitals. They break the law because of their inability to look after themselves in the community and although proceedings are sometimes taken against them before they are transferred to a mental hospital, others are never prosecuted...

Parasuicide is one of the commonest causes of admission to medical wards in the UK, in recent years totalling up to 100000 cases annually. Of these it is estimated that at least a third have reported a previous episode of self-harm and that 15-25% will repeat within three months (Buglass & Horton, 1974a; Morgan et al. 1976; Bancroft & Marzack, 1977). The public health impact of parasuicide is t...

The Horton–Strahler number of a tree is measure its branching complexity. It also known in the literature as register function. We show that for critical Galton–Watson trees with finite variance, conditioned to be size n, grows 1 2log2n probability. further define some generalizations this number. Among these are rigid and k-ary function, which we prove asymptotic results analogous standard case.

The Strahler number or Horton-Strahler number of a tree, originally introduced in geophysics, has a surprisingly rich theory. We sketch some milestones in its history, and its connection to arithmetic expressions, graph traversing, decision problems for context-free languages, Parikh’s theorem, and Newton’s procedure for approximating zeros of differentiable functions.

Osteoclasts are macrophage-related multinucleated cells that resorb bone. Osteoclastic bone-resorbing activity involves a number of differentiation and activation steps including: (i) proliferation and homing of hemopoietic precursors to bone, (ii) their differentiation into mononuclear osteoclasts, (iii) fusion of these cells to form multinucleated osteoclasts, (iv) formation of a sealing zone...
