The Hall effect in a thin bismuth strip was investigated. The Hall voltage was found to be a linear function of the applied current, in agreement with theoretical predictions. However, the Hall voltage was a highly nonlinear function of the magnetic field, in contrast to the linear form predicted by the semiclassical theory. At high magnetic fields, where electron scattering is less important a...
We propose the two formalisms for obtaining the noncommutative spacetime in a magnetic field. One is the first-order formalism and the other is the second-order formalism. Although the noncommutative spacetime is realized manifestly in the first-order formalism, the second-order formalism would be more useful for calculating the physical quantities in the noncommutative geometry than the first-...
We consider the relativistic deformation of quantum waves and mechanical bodies carrying intrinsic angular momentum (AM). When observed in a moving reference frame, the centroid of the object undergoes an AM-dependent transverse shift. This is the relativistic analogue of the spin-Hall effect, which occurs in free space without any external fields. Remarkably, the shifts of the geometric and en...
“One day in the year of 1820, walking to his lecture at the University of Copenhagen, Oersted got an idea. If static electricity did not affect magnets in any way, maybe things would be different if one tried electricity moving through the wire connecting the two poles of the Volta pile. Arriving at the classroom filled with a crowd of young students, Oersted placed on the lecture table his Vol...
Edge states of the quantum Hall fluid provide an opportunity to study mesoscopic effects in a highly correlated electron system that is both experimentally accessible and theoretically tractable. In this paper we review recent work on the persistent current and Aharonov-Bohm magnetoconductance oscillations in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime.
Noncoplanar magnetic orders in magnetic metals give rise to an anomalous Hall effect of unconventional origin, which, by the spin Berry phase effect, is known as the topological Hall effect. This effect is pronounced in the low-temperature limit, where the fluctuation of spins is suppressed. In contrast, we here discuss that the fluctuating but locally correlated spins close to the phase bounda...
This paper reports the correlation between film thickness, nanostructure and DC electrical properties of copper thin films deposited by PVD method on glass substrate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used for crystallography and morphology investigation, respectively. Resistivity was measured by four point probe instrument, while a Hall effects measurement system w...
We have studied a practical approach for the inclusion of non-isotropic impurities in the systems showing integer quantum Hall effect. We observe that if the impurity distribution in the direction which the electric field applys, then the localized levels goes out from the origin with respect to the isotropic case, and the Hall step will the clearly observed.
We focus on inducing topological state from regular, or irregular scattering in (i) p-wave superconducting and (ii) proximity coupled Rashba wires. We find that while disorder is detrimental to topological state in p-wave wires, we find that it can induce topological state in Rashba wires contrary to common expectations. We find that the total phase space area of the topological state is conser...
