Morinda officinalis is beneficial for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The hairy root with higher genetic and biochemical stability cultured from M. officinalis might have similar effects to treat IBD. In this study, the main chemical composition of the root extracts of M. officinalis (MORE) native plant and the hairy root extract of M. officinalis (MOHRE) was compared by quan...

BACKGROUND The therapeutic and health promoting role of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) from fish, i.e. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) are well known. These same benefits may however be shared by some of their precursors, the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as stearidonic acid (SDA, 18:4 n-3). In order to obtain alternative sources ...

Hairy root induction in plants has affected by many factors including type, age of explant and bacterial strain. In the present study, the effects of bacterial strains (A4, C58, 15834 and GM), two concentrations (OD600= 0.5 and 1) and two explants (leaves and stems) in hairy root induction of C. blumei</...

A transformed root culture of Cichorium intybus L. (Asteraceae) was found to produce sesquiterpene lactones of guaiane and germacrane type. Lactucopicrin, 8-desoxylactucin and three sesquiterpene lactone glycosides: crepidiaside B, sonchuside A and ixerisoside D were isolated from the roots. The yield of 8-desoxylactucin reached 0.03 g l(-1) at the early stationary phase of the culture.

Paclitaxel (Taxol®) is a potent anticancer agent, but the widespread pharmaceutical use of paclitaxel hampered by its limited availability due to low accumulation levels in native yew (Taxus spp.) plants. Currently, hairy root culture an emerging biotechnological tool that presents several advantages such as reduced costs and higher specialized metabolite production, therefore, application prod...

Growth and diterpenoid accumulation (salvipisone, ferruginol, aethiopinone and 1-oxoaethiopinone) during the growth cycle of a Salvia sclarea hairy root culture are described. The roots transformed by Agrobacterium rhizogenes (LBA 9402) were cultured in half-strength B5 liquid medium supplemented with 30 g L(-1) sucrose under light (16 h/8 h light/dark). A culture period of 30 days was optimal ...

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) derivatives are used clinically as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, appetite stimulant, anti-emetic and anti-tumor cannabinoids. THC and its related compounds are at present obtained by extraction from intact Cannabis plants or chemical synthesis, but plant cell cultures may be an alternative source of production. In the present study, hairy root cultures of C. sativa (C...

Soybean hairy roots transformed with the resveratrol synthase and resveratrol oxymethyl transferase genes driven by constitutive Arabidopsis actin and CsVMV promoters were characterized. Transformed hairy roots accumulated glycoside conjugates of the stilbenic compound resveratrol and the related compound pterostilbene, which are normally not synthesized by soybean plants. Expression of the non...

Phenylethanoids are a group of natural water-soluble compounds with high biological value, which could potentially be commercially produced by hairy root cultures. Thus, we have examined the capacity of transformed root cultures of Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) to accumulate four phenylethanoid glycosides -beta-OH-verbascoside, verbascoside, leucosceptoside A, and martynoside--in shak...
