Zoonotic transmission of pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV) is a potential public health threat (1, 2), as the virus may acquire human-to-human transmissibility through mutations or by reassortment with seasonal influenza viruses (e.g., H3N2 and H1N1). The recent outbreak of novel H7N9 virus in China is an enigma (3). In contrast to outbreaks of human infections by other avian influenza vir...
The cell surfaces of five enteropathogenic Escherichia coli serotypes (O111:H2; O111:H12; O125:H9; O119:H6; O26:H11) were assayed by chemical methods, lectin agglutination tests and spectroscopy associated to transmission electron microscopy. Results of lectin agglutination assays showed that all strains reacted with mannosebinding lectins. Strains belonging to serotype O125:H9 also agglutinate...
A colistin-resistant mcr-1-carrying Escherichia coli strain, RC2-007, was isolated from a swine farm in Mexico. This extraintestinal and uropathogenic strain of E. coli belongs to serotype O89:H9 and sequence type 744. Assembly and annotation resulted in a 4.9-Mb draft genome that revealed the presence of plasmid-mediated mcr-1-ISApI1 genes as part of a prophage.
A novel virus of the species human adenovirus D, HAdV-67 (P-New/H9/F25), was first isolated from diarrheal feces of six children in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. The genome of this novel virus may be composed of multiple recombinations among HAdV-9, HAdV-25, HAdV-26, HAdV-33, HAdV-46, and an unknown human adenovirus D which was an origin of HAdV-67.
Current evidence suggests that the proliferation and differentiation of normal pre-B-cells may be regulated by interactions with mesenchymally derived stromal cells. The nature of these cell-cell interactions has not yet been fully elucidated, but the involvement of pre-B-cell stimulating factors produced by various mesenchymal cell lines has recently been demonstrated in the murine system. In ...
Isolates of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) undergo many different rates of replication, with the time course of replication being determined by the host cell and the virus. Recently, we demonstrated that the permissiveness of four CD4+ T-cell lines for the laboratory strain NL4-3 correlated with the rate and efficiency of virus entry. In this study, we have analyzed the replication...
We have previously shown that TPA activates HTLV-1 LTR in Jurkat T-cells by inducing the binding of Sp1-p53 complex to the Sp1 site residing within the Ets responsive region 1 (ERR-1) of the LTR and that this activation is inhibited by PKCalpha and PKCepsilon. However, in H9 T-cells TPA has been noted to activate the LTR in two consecutive stages. The first stage is activation is mediated by PK...
The C terminus of the HIV-1 Gag protein contains a proline-rich domain termed p6(Gag). This domain has been shown to play a role in efficient virus release and incorporation of Vpr into virions. In a previous study (X. F. Yu, L. Dawson, C. J. Tian, C. Flexner, and M. Dettenhofer, J. Virol. 72:3412-3417, 1998), we observed that the removal of the p6 domain of Gag as well as drastic mutations in ...
Among the different hemagglutinin (HA) subtypes of avian influenza (AI) viruses, H5, H7, and H9 are of major interest because of the serious consequences for the poultry industry and the increasing frequency of direct transmission of these viruses to humans. The availability of new tools to rapidly detect and subtype the influenza viruses can enable the immediate application of measures to prev...
BACKGROUND Clinical-grade human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) ideally should be derived and maintained in xeno-free culture conditions using defined chemicals or materials of human origin. This will reduce the possibility of xeno-derived pathogenic infection and/or unfavorable immune reaction in clinical application. The present study therefore aimed to derive autogenic feeders from hESCs and ev...
