This paper applies G. Lyubeznik’s notion of F -finite modules to describe in a very down-to-earth manner certain annihilator submodules of some top local cohomology modules over Gorenstein rings. As a consequence we obtain an explicit description of the test ideal of Gorenstein rings in terms of ideals in a regular ring.

We give a characterization of the Lefschetz elements in Artinian Gorenstein rings over a field of characteristic zero in terms of the higher Hessians. As an application, we give new examples of Artinian Gorenstein rings which do not have the strong Lefschetz property.

We formulate a weak Gorenstein property for the Eisenstein component of the p-adic Hecke algebra associated to modular forms. We show that this weak Gorenstein property holds if and only if a weak form of Sharifi’s conjecture and a weak form of Greenberg’s conjecture hold.

We prove a decomposition theorem for the cd-index of a Gorenstein* poset analogous to the decomposition theorem for the intersection cohomology of a toric variety. From this we settle a conjecture of Stanley that the cd-index of Gorenstein* lattices is minimized on Boolean algebras.
