Background: Infected with intestinal parasites is one of the most important health and economical problems, which could have different effects, such as diarrheal diseases or death associated. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia parasites in the vegetable marketed in Ilam city. Methods: This study was performed on 280 samples of fresh...
BACKGROUND The primary aims of this study were to determine the incidence of Giardia infections in dairy herds on farms in the New York City Watershed region and to evaluate risk factors associated with infections. Because co-infections of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. are common in this population, we also evaluated the effect of herd infection status on Giardia infections. METHODS Farms ...
Some genes in the candidate early-branching eukaryote Giardia lamblia occur in separate pieces, transcribed from non-contiguous chromosomal locations. The pre-mRNAs from the separate pieces apparently find each other by regions of complementarity and are subsequently spliced together by the spliceosome. Could genes in pieces, transcribed into separate pre-mRNAs, have been an early feature of sp...
Design and synthesis of a novel nucleotide anti-Giardia agent that is micromolar inhibitor of Giardia trophozoite growth in culture is described.
The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is a carnivorous marsupial found only in the wild in Tasmania, Australia. Tasmanian devils are classified as endangered and are currently threatened by devil facial tumour disease, a lethal transmissible cancer that has decimated the wild population in Tasmania. To prevent extinction of Tasmanian devils, conservation management was implemented in 2003 ...
In this study, we investigated the role of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in Giardia lamblia infections in mice. Elevated IL-6 expression was found in wild-type mice 15 days postinfection. Furthermore, IL-6-deficient mice controlled infections only slowly although normal immunoglobulin A production was observed. Thus, IL-6 is necessary for early control of acute G. lamblia infections.
The presence of normal bacterial flora in the intestinal tract is thought to protect against colonization by pathogens. Only a few specific examples of this protection have been demonstrated for bacterial pathogens and protozoan infections. Mice from one commercial breeding farm were found to be less susceptible to infection with Giardia lamblia than were isogenic mice from another facility. Wh...
Giardia is a flagellate protozoan with worldwide distribution that causes significant gastrointestinal diseases. The life cycle of the organism alternates between the active, proliferating trophozoite and the dormant cyst. 5-Nitroimida-zoles have been used extensively in the treatment of amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis. We have previously synthesized ...
Abstract Background: Giardia lamblia is a frequent cause of diarrhea in humans and other mammals across the world. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of Giardia lamblia in Iran. Materials and Methods: Search was done in data base such as: ISI , Pubmed , Magiran, IranMedex, SID and IranDoc with the words" Giardia lamblia" since 1990 onward. Overall, 43 studies were select...
A system of tangential-flow filtration was evaluated for use in the detection of Giardia cysts in drinking water. This method was more sensitive in recovering cysts than a frequently used wound-orlon system of through-filtration.
