Seventy-three low birthweight babies were independently assessed for gestational age using the scoring system of Dubowitz et al. (1970) and 5 neurological reflexes described by Robinson (1966). The results obtained by the 5 reflexes were compared with those obtained by the scoring system and were found to be accurate estimations of gestational age. The 5 reflexes may be used for babies of gesta...

BACKGROUND Small for gestational age (SGA) infants are at increased risk of short- and long-term adverse outcomes. METHODS Population-based case-control study using data derived from the Finnish Medical Birth Register for the years 1987-2010 (total population of singleton live births n = 1,390,165). The aim was to quantify the importance of risk factors for SGA and describe their contribution...

We present a model for longitudinal measures of fetal weight as a function of gestational age. We use a linear mixed model, with a Box-Cox transformation of fetal weight values, and restricted cubic splines, in order to flexibly but parsimoniously model median fetal weight. We systematically compare our model to other proposed approaches. All proposed methods are shown to yield similar median e...

Previous studies have reported an association between preterm birth and elevated blood pressure in adolescence and young adulthood. These studies were based on single-day blood pressure measurements and had limited ability to estimate risk of hypertension measured over a longer period and across the full range of gestational ages. The authors conducted a national cohort study of all infants bor...

BACKGROUND: Birth weight- and gestational age-specific perinatal mortality curves intersect when compared across categories of maternal smoking, plurality, race and other factors. No simple explanation exists for this paradoxical observation. METHODS: We used data on all live births, stillbirths and infant deaths in Canada (1991-1997) to compare perinatal mortality rates among singleton and twi...

Optimising the timing of delivery involves striking a balance between the benefits and risks of pregnancy prolongation compared with those of induction or elective Caesarean delivery. Birth of the baby is always in the best interest of the woman. For her, pregnancy prolongation has no direct benefit, but for the baby, the benefits may be large at gestational ages remote from term. This can be a...

Oxidative injury may contribute to the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and bilirubin may be a physiologically important antioxidant. Therefore we evaluated the relationship of ROP to bilirubin levels in 157 infants born at 23 to 26 weeks estimated gestational age. We found no definite association between bilirubin levels and severe ROP.

The gestational age of 302 neonates whose obstetric gestational age was known was assessed at birth using the Dubowitz method; it was obtained from Dubowitz score both graphically from a nomogram and by calculation from the corresponding equation. The values obtained graphically differed to a lesser extent from the obstetric gestational age than did the gestation derived algebraically. With inf...
