The isolation of beta haemolytic streptococci was compared using Columbia sheep blood agar with and without gentamicin in a final concentration of 5.5 micrograms per ml. The inclusion of gentamicin gave greatly improved results whenever the isolation of this organism in pure culture was complicated by overgrowth with Gram-negative bacilli or staphylococci.
Surgical site infections are one of the most important causes of healthcare associated infections (HCAI), accounting for 20% of all HCAIs. Surgical site infections affect 1% of joint replacement operations. This study was designed to assess whether theatre clothing is contaminated more inside or outside the theatre suite. Petri dishes filled with horse blood agar were pressed on theatre clothes...
Sabouraud dextrose agar with and without chloramphenicol (0.05 mg/mL) and cycloheximide (0.5 mg/mL) and incubated at 26C and 37C respectively. The cultures were examined twice weekly for a period of six weeks. The different types of colonies were subcultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar slants and pure cultures of the isolates were identified on the basis of microscopic morphology and cultural ch...
The growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae on brain heart infusion blood agar in which the base was sterilized by filtration has been compared with growth on the same medium sterilized by heat. Colonies were larger on the unheated medium, and autoclaving at 115 degrees C of 121 degrees C for 15 minutes was accompanied by a progressive decrease in colony size. Viable counts on the three media showed no...
The present study presents the development of mycelium of Morchella conica where different concentration of sucrose added at different agar media. For this sucrose have been added as 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.25% concentration to wheat agar potato dextrose agar malt extract agar and complete medium yeast agar The radial growth speed, morphologic specifications, radial growth radius and pigme...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Group B streptococcal (GBS) disease is the most common cause of early onset neonatal sepsis. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends performing recto-vaginal cultures on pregnant woman to detect GBS, followed by treatment of women with positive cultures. Our facility adopted selective culture screening in 1997 using a colistin-naladixic acid (CNA) plate media ...
BACKGROUND Group B streptococcus (GBS), which asymptomatically colonises the vaginal and rectal areas of women, is the leading cause of septicemia, meningitis and pneumonia in neonates. In Tanzania no studies have been done on GBS colonisation of pregnant women and neonates. This study was conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to determine the prevalence of GBS colonisation among pregnant women,...
OBJECTIVES The evaluation of Mutans streptococci (MS) is one of the index for caries risk. Dentocult(TM) and CRT(TM) are commercial kits to detect and evaluate MS, conveniently. However, the evaluation of MS has also been carried out simply using an instruction manual. But the instruction manual is not easy to use for evaluation of MS. The aim of this study was to examine the utility of modifie...
the use of propionate agar resulted in very low yeast counts in samples of plant material as compared to the populations obtained with acidified dextrose agar and synthetic agar. Acidified synthetic agar proved to be the medium of choice for the enumeration and isolation of yeasts from plant material. Counts obtained on this medium were comparable to those on acidified dextrose agar and mold gr...
