A procedure for generating infinite series identities makes use of the generalized method of exhaustion by analytically evaluating the inner series of the resulting double summation. Identities are generated involving both elementary and special functions. Infinite sums of special functions include those of the gamma and polygamma functions, the Hurwitz Zeta function, the polygamma function, th...

In [7], Greene introduced the notion of general hypergeometric series over finite fields or Gaussian hypergeometric series, which are analogous to classical hypergeometric series. The motivation for his work was to develop the area of character sums and their evaluations through parallels with the theory of hypergeometric functions. The basis for this parallel was the analogy between Gauss sums...

We consider representations of quadratic R-matrix algebras by means of certain first order ordinary differential operators. These operators turn out to act as parameter shifting operators on the Gauss hypergeometric function and its limit cases and on classical orthogonal polynomials. The relationship with W. Miller’s treatment of Lie algebras of first order differential operators will be discu...

Hydrostatic equilibrium and energy conservation determine the conditions in the gravitationally stabilized solar fusion reactor. We assume a matter density distribution varying non-linearly through the central region of the Sun. The analytic solutions of the differential equations of mass conservation, hydrostatic equilibrium, and energy conservation, together with the equation of state of the ...

In this article, we give a proof of the link between the zeta function of two families of hypergeometric curves and the zeta function of a family of quintics that was observed numerically by Candelas, de la Ossa, and Rodriguez Villegas. The method we use is based on formulas of Koblitz and various Gauss sums identities; it does not give any geometric information on the link.

A known family of fractional integral operators (with the Gauss hypergeometric function in the kernel) is used here to define some new subclasses of strongly starlike and strongly convex functions of order β and type α in the open unit disk U. For each of these new function classes, several inclusion relationships associated with the fractional integral operators are established. Some interesti...

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the Gauss hypergeometric function when several of the parameters a, b, c are large. We indicate which cases are of interest for orthogonal polynomials (Jacobi, but also Krawtchouk, Meixner, etc.), which results are already available and which cases need more attention. We also consider a few examples of 3F2 functions of unit argument, to explain which dif...

We obtain asymptotic expansions for the Gauss hypergeometric function F(a+ ε1λ ,b+ ε2λ ;c+ ε3λ ;z) as |λ | →∞ when the ε j are finite by an application of the method of steepest descents, thereby extending previous results corresponding to ε j = 0, ±1 . By means of connection formulas satisfied by F it is possible to arrange the above hypergeometric function into three basic groups. In Part I w...
