The results of the study of the suspension stability of the blood after upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction are reported. After obstruction of the cardiac end of the stomach, of the pylorus, and of the jejunum the red cells separate from the plasma much more rapidly than normal. The variation in sedimentation time is due to a variation in the physicochemical status of the blood.

A patient who presented with massive upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage underwent a Billroth II partial gastrectomy. He developed efferent loop obstruction due to a retained abdominal drain.
