BACKGROUND Since the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) became fully operational in 1989, meteorologists have spent considerable time trying to identify cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning characteristics that are uniquely associated with severe weather. Many studies focused on the dominant CG lightning polarity as a potential indicator of severe weather. Knapp (1994) found that 39% of...

O 31 October 2008 and the following day, numerous Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) residents called 911 to report experiencing several small earthquakes, accompanied by loud booming noises and the shaking of walls and furniture. Using data recorded by regional seismic stations, the USGS National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) located nine earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.5 and 3.0. On 16 May ...

We describe a simple framework for micro simulation of city traac. A medium sized excerpt of Dallas was used to examine diierent levels of simulation delity of a cellular automaton method for the traac ow simulation and a simple intersection model. We point out problems arising with the granular structure of the underlying rules of motion.

Abstract Cities serve as hubs for various activities that necessitate comprehensive transportation connectivity. This study examines the decadal urban agglomeration patterns from 2001 to 2020 and critically assesses relationship between freeway developments, industrial relocation, population density in DFW (Dallas Fort Worth) metropolitan area. Landsat satellite imageries, US census, open-sourc...

In the national airspace system, sectors get overloaded due to high traffic demand and inefficient airspace designs. Overloads can be eliminated in some cases by redesigning sector boundaries. This paper extends the Voronoi-based sector design method by automatically selecting the number of sectors, allowing three-dimensional partitions, and enforcing traffic pattern conformance. The method was...

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is used as an example of how traditional approaches hardening isolated components critical infrastructure against specific threats leaves assets exposed to significant, expensive, and unacceptable levels cascading failure. Optimizing the entire airport supply chain requires development interdisciplinary approach that incorporates complexities airports...

In recent time, tra c demand in metropolitan areas has largely exceeded capacity. Typical remedies such as the expansion of the road way system or road improvement do not work well anymore for various reasons: on the one hand communities cannot a ord the increased costs of road construction, on the other hand there are political and environmental objections. Therefore, computer simulation as a ...

This paper presents detailed results from a highfidelity human-in-the-loop evaluation of an airport surface decision support tool. The Spot And Runway Departure Advisor is designed to aid controllers in managing aircraft surface operations and is based on two optimization algorithms: the Spot Release Planner and the Runway Scheduler. The Spot Release Planner provides sequence and timing advisor...

A prototype decision support tool for terminal area air traffic controllers, referred to as the Final Approach Spacing Tool (FAST), was recently evaluated in operation with live air traffic at the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas Airport. Controllers utilized FAST’s runway and sequence advisories to manage and control arrival traffic during more than twenty-five peak rush traffic periods. This paper pr...
