An optimal control problem for the heat equation is considered. The form of the functional is chosen to guarantee a uniform cooling of a rod. The problem is approximated by a finite dimensional optimal control problem. The optimal solution to the latter problem is studied analytically. It is shown that the original problem can be reduced to a simple three-dimensional optimization problem.
