Fasciculations are characterized by visible subtle and fast contractions of muscle, even wormlike in movement, by the contraction of a fascicle of muscle fibers. The authors present the case study of a 28-year-old patient with the appearance of migratory and diffuse fasciculations with an onset after partial tapering off of oral corticosteroides (60 mg total dose) indicated for treatment of Min...

Fyn is the cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase that has critical roles in many aspects of biological functions. In the central [1] and peripheral nervous systems [2], [3], Fyn plays the key role in initiating myelination by myelin-forming glial cells (Schwann cells and oligodendrocytes). Herein we provide the data regarding the role of Fyn in fasciculation and branching of embryonic peripheral nerves.

The case is described of a 51-year-old man with a 21 year history of severe, long-lasting and widespread muscle cramps. Physical examination revealed muscle hypertrophy and fasciculation; electromyography showed spontaneously active motor units which disappeared during sleep. Cramps could be aborted by ice or mechanical vibration but the most effective management was achieved using transcutaeno...

We have examined the consequences of surface interactions with glial and nonglial cells on the in vitro growth of CNS neurons. When cerebellar or spinal cord cells were plated onto monolayers highly enriched in cortical astrocytes or sciatic nerve Schwann cells, neurons generally grew as single cells and showed relatively little tendency to aggregate. Similarly, neurites showed little tendency ...

PURPOSE The present visual and electromyographic study was designed to evaluate muscle fasciculations caused by succinylcholine in adults pretreated with either remifentanil 1.5 microg/kg or saline. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effect of remifentanil on succinylcholine-induced muscle fasciculations was studied using a double-blind method in 40 adults. After i.v. pretreatment with either remifent...

Axons use temporal and directional guidance cues at intermediate targets to set the rate and direction of growth towards their synaptic targets. Our recent studies have shown that disrupting the temporal guidance process, by unilaterally accelerating the rate at which spinal dI1 (commissural) axons grow, resulted in turning errors both in the ventral spinal cord and after crossing the floor pla...

The extensor digitorum brevis and abductor digiti minimi muscles were examined bilaterally with electromyography in 53 healthy subjects. In 72% of the subjects either fibrillation potentials, positive sharp waves or fasciculation was seen in at least one muscle examined. These slight, usually symmetric neuropathic signs are believed to be associated with normal aging and to some extent also wit...
