Alluvial fans develop at the base of drainages where feeder channels release their solid load (Blair and McPherson, 2009; Leeder et al., 1998; Harvey et al., 2005). A classic fan-shape forms where there is a well-defined topographic apex. Multiple feeder channels, however, often blur the fan-shape resulting in a merged bajada. Alluvial fans can be found in almost all terrestrial settings. These...
A 3D computational electromagnetic-thermal coupled analysis was performed to analyze the effects of auxiliary cooling fans, called air-gap fans, on winding cooling in a large-capacity, high-speed induction motor. A novel non-uniform iron loss distribution mapping method considering time and rotation period was introduced to provide more accurate thermal modeling. Winding cooling performance in ...
In this thesis, I present a technique for profiling gene expression of specific cell types in the central nervous system (CNS), called fluorescence activated nuclei sorting (FANS). FANS utilizes flow cytometry to isolate cell nuclei from CNS subtypes and microarray analysis of nuclear mRNA. When compared to an existing technique, translating ribosome affinity purification, it was found that FAN...
This article sets out the case for a new framework within which to study hard rock and metal fans as a group. I argue that dominant frameworks in metal studies – subcultural theory and the concept of scene – are inadequate for understanding the experiences of women fans; the underlying gendered epistemology has resulted in a dismissal of women fans or, at best, a systematic reduction of their e...
The aim of this paper was to empirically investigate the behavior of fans, globally coupled to a common environmental source of information. The environmental stimuli were given in a form of referee’s decisions list. The sample of fans had to respond on each stimulus by associating points signifying his/her own opinion, emotion and action that referee’s decisions provoke. Data were fitted by th...
We provide a quiver-theoretic interpretation of certain smooth complete simplicial fans associated to arbitrary finite root systems in recent work of S. Fomin and A. Zelevinsky. The main properties of these fans then become easy consequences of the known facts about tilting modules due to K. Bongartz, D. Happel and C. M. Ringel.

The Fuzzy Adaptive Neighborhood Search (FANS) method was previously presented and succesfully compared against a genetic algorithm and simulated annealing doing minimization of functions in Rn. Here we propose to evaluate FANS on instances of knapsack with multiple restrictions problems, making comparison against the cited algorithms in order to gain knowledge about the behaviour of our method.
BACKGROUND The health outcomes of men continue to be poorer than women globally. Challenges in addressing this problem include difficulties engaging men in weight loss programs as they tend to view these programs as contrary to the masculine narrative of independence and self-reliance. Researchers have been turning towards sports fans to engage men in health promotion programs as sports fans ar...
River deltas and alluvial fans have channelization and deposition dynamics that are not entirely understood, but which dictate the evolution of landscapes of great social, economic, and ecologic value. Our lack of a process-based understanding of fan dynamics hampers our ability to construct accurate prediction and hazard models, leaving these regions vulnerable. Here we describe the growth of ...
