In this paper we will present a design model (in the sense of KADS) for the domain of technical diagnosis. Based on this we will describe the fully implemented expert system shell MOLTKE 3.0, which integrates common knowledge acquisition methods with techniques developed in the fields of Model-Based Diagnosis and Machine Learning, especially Case-Based Reasoning.
The design of liquid retaining structures involves many decisions to be made by the designer based on rules of thumb, heuristics, judgment, code of practice and previous experience. Structural design problems are often ill structured and there is a need to develop programming environments that can incorporate engineering judgment along with algorithmic tools. Recent developments in artificial i...
Distributed or parallel rule-based systems are currently needed for real applications. The proposed architecture of such a system is based on a wrapper allowing the cooperation between several instances of the rule-based system running on different computers of a cluster. As case study a parallel version of the Java Expert System Shell is built. Initial tests show its efficiency when running cl...
Isaac is a rule-based language for mobile robots currently under development at NMSU. A successor to Altaira, it replaces Altaira’s state-based rules and tile-based navigation with a more general geometric reasoning mechanism. The language uses the FuzzyCLIPS expert system shell as a reasoning backend.

This paper presents an application of the Dempster-Shafer evidence combination scheme in building a rule based expert system shell for diagnostic reasoning. Domain knowledge is stored as rules with associated belief functions. The reasoning component uses a combination of forward and backward inferencing mechanisms to interact with the user in a mixed initiative format.
ultrasonic machining (usm) is a mechanical material removal process used to erode holes and cavities in hard or brittle work pieces by using shaped tools, high-frequency and an abrasive slurry. this paper addresses the concept and development of an expert system (es) for hard and brittle material, such as glass, quartz, diamond, carbides, semi conducting materials, ceramic and graphite which ca...
today, expert systems are widely applied in medicine for prognosis, diagnosis, checkup, and treatment of various kinds of diseases. a comprehensive system for the checkup and treatment of different types of diabetes is still lacking. this paper reports development of such a system, its validation, and its utility in facilitating medical decision-making and supporting self-care.
This paper describes the system SYNHESYS, which is a shell for developing expert systems composed of both a connectionist module and a symbolic module. The shell allows for several types of interactions between the two modules, and for several degrees of coupling. SYNHESYS aims at facilitating the process of knowledge acquisition and at improving the performance of the symbolic module. We prese...
