BACKGROUND Opioids are known to stimulate surface electroencephalographic activity in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. The objective of the current study was to compare the electrocorticographic activation effects of the newer short-acting opioid remifentanil with those of alfentanil during epilepsy surgery under general anaesthesia. METHODS Thirteen patients undergoing temporal lobe epi...
Background: Sleep Seizures (SSs) generally occur in refractory focal epilepsy, but their detailed characteristics and circadian patterns are still controversial. The effect of SSs on epilepsy surgery outcome has been addressed in few studies without definitive prognostic value. Objectives: This study investigated the characteristics of SSs and their prognosis in refractory focal epilepsy. M...
This study was to examine the therapeutic effect of low-frequency electric stimulation (LFS) on the epileptogenic focus in amygdale-kindled rats, and to find out the optimal stimulus parameters. A microelectrode was implanted into the right amygdale of adult male rats. After fully kindling, LFS was delivered to the right amygdale (through the electrode) between seizures to induce stimulus train...
The GABA withdrawal syndrome (GWS) is a model of local status epilepticus consecutive to the interruption of a prolonged GABA infusion into the rat somatomotor cortex. Bursting patterns in slices from GWS rats include intrinsic bursts of action potentials (APs) induced by intracellular depolarizing current injection and/or paroxysmal depolarization shifts (PDSs) induced by white matter stimulat...
An illustrative case of auditory aura and complex partial seizures is presented to highlight challenges in the accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone. Application and interpretation of various diagnostic tools is discussed in this case using the North American approach to the localization of the epileptogenic zone. Whenever possible, the differences and similarities between the North A...
Radiol Bras. 2014 Jan/Fev;47(1):IX Even though epilepsy is known since the antiquity and, despite the great developments in the diagnosis and clinical treatment of this disease, there are still cases of refractory epilepsy to conventional antiepileptic drugs. In such cases of refractory epilepsy when an epileptogenic focus has been defined, surgery may be indicated for focus resection, if it is...
Electrical source imaging of interictal spikes observed in EEG recordings of patients with refractory epilepsy provides useful information to localize the epileptogenic focus during the presurgical evaluation. However, the selection of the time points or time epochs of the spikes in order to estimate the origin of the activity remains a challenge. In this study, we consider a Bayesian EEG sourc...
We studied 59 seizure patients with CT, MR, and EEG to determine the efficacy of each in the detection of an epileptogenic focus. EEG was most sensitive (67%), MR was next (53%), and CT was least sensitive (42%). MR detected an abnormality in five patients (8%) in whom CT was negative. EEG was positive in each of these patients. CT failed to demonstrate any focal lesion not detected by MR. MR a...
The transcript levels of the protein kinase C (PKC) isoform genes during the development of a kindled epileptogenic focus, elicited by stimulation of Schaffer collateral/commissural fibres in the CA1 area of the rat hippocampus, were compared with the expression levels in control animals using a semi-quantitative in situ hybridization approach. In the hippocampus of control animals, the levels ...
