Objectives: I. Describe the structure of the Mitochondrion. A. Compare the structure of the outer membrane to the structure of the inner membrane. B. What metabolic pathways are localized to the mitochondrion? 1. Where in the mitochondrion are they located? II. What is(are) the overall chemical reaction(s) of electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation? III. Describe the overall makeup of ...

Micromorphological studies were carried out on the surfaces of the ZnS single crystals grown by chemical vapour transport (CVT). Different micromorphological patterns such as layers, steps, kinks, stripes and pits were observed using Scanning Electron Microscope. Formation of these patterns was correlated to the growth of crystals under theoretically predicted optimum and nonoptimum conditions.

Active transport of proline was observed in both electron transport particles and cell membrane ghosts from Mycobacterium phlei. The transport of proline was dependent upon substrate oxidation and the presence of Li+ or Na+, but not upon the formation of a high energy phosphorylated intermediate. The requirement for Na+ was different from Na+ coupled transport systems which have been described;...

Light-driven electron transport is coupled to ATP synthesis in chloroplasts. While the nature of the coupling and the structures of key components are now known, there has long been disagreement over pathways of electron transport. Recent results now put an old idea back on the agenda-cyclic electron transport around photosystem I.

We present a theory of full counting statistics for electron transport through interacting electron systems with non-Markovian dynamics. We illustrate our approach for transport through a single-level quantum dot and a metallic single-electron transistor to second order in the tunnel coupling, and discuss under which circumstances non-Markovian effects appear in the transport properties.

Oxide heterointerfaces are ideal for investigating strong correlation effects to electron transport, relevant for oxide-electronics. Using hot-electrons, we probe electron transport perpendicular to the La₀.₇Sr₀.₃MnO₃ (LSMO)- Nb-doped SrTiO₃ (Nb:STO) interface and find the characteristic hot-electron attenuation length in LSMO to be 1.48 ± 0.10 unit cells (u.c.) at -1.9 V, increasing to 2.02 ± ...

We show that polymer light-emitting diodes with high work-function cathodes and conjugated polyelectrolyte injection/transport layers exhibit excellent efficiencies despite large electron-injection barriers. Correlation of device response times with structure provides evidence that the electron-injection mechanism involves redistribution of the ions within the polyelectrolyte electron-transport...

In This Issue In This Issue Rafts and the evil amyloids ipid rafts are bad news for those with Alzheimer's disease (AD). On page 113, Ehehalt et al. show that formation of the ␤-amyloid peptide (A ␤), which is tightly linked to AD, depends on the raft association of one of its creators. The creating enzyme is ␤-secretase, which cleaves the amyloid precursor protein (APP) to release a product th...
