A 76-year-old woman with a longstanding history of right elbow swelling and recurrent joint effusion presented for consultation. There was no history of trauma and conventional radiographs were negative. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging were performed and showed a frond-like fatty synovial mass and joint effusion. Arthrotomy disclosed a lipoma arborescens of the right elbow.
Proper orientation of the shoulder and elbow is necessary for accurate and precise positioning of the hand. The authors' goal was to compare these joints with an active joint position sense task, while also taking into account the effects of joint flexion angle and arm dominance. Fifteen healthy subjects were asked to replicate presented joint angles with a single degree of freedom active posit...
normal range of joint motion is an important factor in joint examination in clinical practice which is related to factors such as age, sex and geographic region. there is no data in the literature on the range of joint motions in healthy iranian adults. we studied joint motions in 100 healthy volunteer subjects, 49 men and 51 women, from 19 and 58 years of age. the joint mobility was examined i...
osteochondritis dissecans (ocd) is a common joint disorder in knee, ankle and elbow, however it can be rarely found in glenohumeral joint. in this study, we report an asymptomatic case of humeral head ocd, which was detected incidentally following a trauma. x-rays showed an area of lucency around an oval bony fragment measuring about 1 cm on the superior aspect of the humeral head. however, the...
Tuberculous synovitis in the elbow joint is extremely rare in developed countries. We describe a 68-year-old man who had had a gradually enlarging mass over the volar side of the left proximal forearm near the elbow joint for 4 months. Plain roentgenograms of the diseased elbow showed early osteoarthritic change. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed diffuse synovitis with a large 8 x 8 cm extra-...
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the surface stress at the proximal ends of the ulna and radius at different elbow flexion angles using the resistance strain method. METHODS Eight fresh adult cadaveric elbows were tested. The forearms were fixed in a neutral position. Axial load increment experiments were conducted at four different elbow flexion angles (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°). Surface ...
BACKGROUND The divergent dislocation of the elbow is not common in children, and the imaging is difficult and challenging. This often leads to misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment. The literature has reported a total of 19 cases currently. METHODS A 10-year-old girl with divergent dislocation of the elbow was admitted in our department in November 2013. When playing basketball, her right e...
There is a paucity of information in the extant literature regarding the detailed anatomy of the subanconeus (articularis cubiti) muscle. Our current study seeks to elucidate further the presence, morphology, and potential function of this muscle. Eighteen cadaveric upper extremities underwent dissection of their posterior elbow joint capsule with special attention to any fibres attaching to it...

Most transhumeral amputees report that their prosthetic device lacks functionality, citing the control strategy as a major limitation. Indeed, they are required to control several degrees of freedom with muscle groups primarily used for elbow actuation. As a result, most of them choose to have a one-degree-of-freedom myoelectric hand for grasping objects, a myoelectric wrist for pronation/supin...
