Many theorists assume that the cognitive system is composed of a collection of encapsulated processing components or modules, each dedicated to performing a particular cognitive function. On this view, selective impairments of cognitive tasks following brain damage, as evidenced by double dissociations, are naturally interpreted in terms of the loss of particular processing components. By contr...

Efficient attention to our environment facilitates the decisions that need to be executed in daily life. Filtering critical from noncritical information may require the neural organization of multiple brain regions. Combining lesion techniques and the rodent version of the Wisconsin card sorting task in humans, we show at least two types of attentional processing systems reside in the cingulate...

Between-Task Double Dissociation is defined as a particular pattern of effects of two factors (manipulations) F and G on performance measures MT1 and MT2 in two tasks implemented by different complex processes. F and G might be the amounts of damage in two brain regions. The factors must influence the measures selectively: MT1 influenced by F but invariant with respect to G; MT2 influenced by G...

In spatial compatibility tasks, when the spatial location of a stimulus is irrelevant it nevertheless interferes when a response is required in a different spatial location. For example, response with a left key-press is slowed when the stimulus is presented to the right as compared to the left side of a computer screen. However, in some conditions this interference effect is not detected in re...

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are free-standing nanostructures with chemically tunable electronic properties. This combination of properties offers intriguing new possibilities for nanoelectromechanical devices that were not explored yet. In this work, we consider a new scanning tunneling microscopy setup for measuring ligand-mediated effective interdot forces and for inducing motion of individ...

We present results from a measurement of double diffraction dissociation in pp collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The production cross section for events with a central pseudorapidity gap of width Deltaeta(0)>3 (overlapping eta = 0) is found to be 4.43+/-0.02(stat)+/-1.18(syst) mb [ 3.42+/-0.01(stat)+/-1.09(syst) mb] at square root of (s) = 1800[630] GeV. Our results are compared wit...

We report two patients with right hemisphere lesions who demonstrate a double dissociation on visual imagery and visual perceptual tasks. One (M.N.) performed normally on a variety of standard tests for neglects as well as on measures of visual attention known to be sensitive to the presence of neglect, yet failed to report items from the left side of an imagined scene. In contrast, the other (...

Photoproduction events which have two or more jets with transverse energy ET GeV have been studied in the p centre of mass energy range GeV W GeV with the H detector at HERA The fraction f of events with a rapidity gap between the two highest ET jets is measured as a function of the rapidity separation between the jet axes A gap is de ned as the absence between the jets of any particle with ene...

A model of the normal processing of gestures to account for the complexity of the different patterns of apraxia has been proposed by Rothi et al. (1991; 1997) and recently refined by Cubelli et al. (2000). This model, in analogy with the dual-route models of reading (e.g., Coltheart et al., 1993) encompasses three processing components1: (i) A “lexical route” which supports recognition (action ...

The E. coli GroEL/GroES chaperonin complex acts as a folding cage by producing a bullet-like asymmetric complex, and GroEL exists as double rings regardless of the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Its mammalian chaperonin homolog, heat shock protein, HSP60, and co-chaperonin, HSP10, play an essential role in protein folding by capturing unfolded proteins in the HSP60/HSP10 complex. How...
