We study the parameterized complexity of dominating sets in geometric intersection graphs. In one dimension, we investigate intersection graphs induced by translates of a fixed pattern Q that consists of a finite number of intervals and a finite number of isolated points. We prove that Dominating Set on such intersection graphs is polynomially solvable whenever Q contains at least one interval,...
In this thesis, we study two problems in combinatorial optimization, the dominating set problem and the robustness problem. In the first half of the thesis, we focus on the dominating set problem in grid graphs and present a distributed algorithm for finding near optimal dominating sets on grids. The dominating set problem is a well-studied mathematical problem in which the goal is to find a mi...
This paper is devoted to the online dominating set problem and its variants on trees, bipartite, bounded-degree, planar, and general graphs, distinguishing between connected and not necessarily connected graphs. We believe this paper represents the first systematic study of the effect of two limitations of online algorithms: making irrevocable decisions while not knowing the future, and being i...
In this paper we study cooperative cost games arising from domination problems on graphs. We introduce three games to model the cost allocation problem and we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the balancedness of all three games. Furthermore we study concavity of these games.
We study the approximability of the weighted edge-dominating set problem. Although even the unweighted case is NP-Complete, in this case a solution of size at most twice the minimum can be efficiently computed due to its close relationship with minimum maximal matching; however, in the weighted case such a nice relationship is not known to exist. In this paper, after showing that weighted edge ...
A set D of vertices in a connected graph G is called a k-dominating set if every vertex in G − D is within distance k from some vertex of D. The k-domination number of G, γk(G), is the minimum cardinality over all k-dominating sets of G. A graph G is k-distance domination-critical if γk(G − x) < γk(G) for any vertex x in G. This work considers properties of k-distance domination-critical graphs...
For every positive integer k, a set S of vertices in a graph G = (V;E) is a k- tuple dominating set of G if every vertex of V -S is adjacent to at least k vertices and every vertex of S is adjacent to at least k - 1 vertices in S. The minimum cardinality of a k-tuple dominating set of G is the k-tuple domination number of G. When k = 1, a k-tuple domination number is the well-studied domination...
A k-dominating set is a set D of nodes of a graph such that, for each node v, there exists a node w ∈ D at distance at most k from v. Our aim is the deterministic distributed construction of small T -dominating sets in time T in networks modeled as undirected n-node graphs and under the LOCAL communication model. For any positive integer T , if b is the size of a pairwise disjoint collection of...
Let G be a graph on n vertices and m edges. An edge is written xy (equivalently yx). A dominating set in G is a set of vertices D such that every vertex of G is either in D or is adjacent to some vertex of D. It is said to be minimal if it does not contain any other dominating set as a proper subset. For every vertex x let N [x] be {x} ∪ {y | xy ∈ E}, and for every S ⊆ V let N [S] := ⋃ x∈S N [x...
