This study makes use of the Tsallis entropy to predict the shear stress distribution. Given a definition of the Tsallis entropy, it is maximized by using the probability density function, which then is used to attain a novel shear stress equation. This is then employed for calculating the shear stress distribution in rectangular channels in different aspect ratios and finally, for viability, th...

The objective of this study was to investigate how the earth dam is destroyed due to the effect of upstream and downstream slope of the body in overflow conditions. Therefore, eight models were provided that each model is constructed from the embankment dam with different upstream and downstream slopes (1:1, 2:1) and the soil properties (Sc) on breach formation. The time and method of dam break...

Endothelial purinoceptors play an important role in vascular responses to extracellular adenine nucleotides and hemodynamic forces. Here we report that P2X4 purinoceptor expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells is transcriptionally downregulated by fluid shear stress. When human umbilical vein endothelial cells were subjected to a laminar shear stress of 15 dyn/cm(2), P2X4 mRNA leve...

Several surfactant molecules self-assemble in solution to form long, cylindrical, flexible wormlike micelles. These micelles can be entangled with each other leading to viscoelastic phases. The rheological properties of such phases are very interesting and have been the subject of a large number of experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. We will report our recent work on the macro...

We present experiments involving cancer cells adhering in microchannels, subjected to increasing shear stresses (0.1Pa to 30Pa). Morphological studies are carried out at different shear stresses. Cells exhibit spreading patterns similar to the ones observed in static conditions, as long as the shear stress is not too high. At critical wall shear stresses (around 2− 5Pa), cells decrease their ce...

The background method is adapted to derive rigorous limits on surface speeds and bulk energy dissipation for shear stress driven flow in two and three dimensional channels. By-products of the analysis are nonlinear energy stability results for plane Couette flow with a shear stress boundary condition: when the applied stress is gauged by a dimensionless Grashoff number Gr, the critical Gr for e...

Surface membrane expression and conformational activation of CD18 integrins into an open molecular configuration play critical roles in neutrophil ligand binding, membrane attachment, spreading on the endothelium, and cell migration to sites of inflammation. Previously, we observed pseudopod retraction and concomitant cleavage of CD18 by human neutrophils upon exposure to fluid shear stress. Bu...

Previous studies have shown that biological structures such as plant roots can have large impacts on landscape morphodynamics, and that physical models that do not incorporate biology can generate qualitatively incorrect predictions of sediment transport. However, work to date has focused almost entirely on the impacts of single, usually dominant, species. Here we ask whether multiple, coexisti...

von Willebrand factor (VWF), a protein present in our circulatory system, is necessary to stop bleeding under high shear-stress conditions as found in small blood vessels. The results presented here help unravel how an increase in hydrodynamic shear stress activates VWF's adhesion potential, leading to the counterintuitive phenomena of enhanced adsorption rate under strong shear conditions. Usi...

An exponential formula that does not involve the concept of the critical shear stress is derived in this study for computing bedload transport rates. The formula represents well various experimental data sets ranging from the weak transport to high shear conditions. Comparisons of the present study are also made with many previous bedload formulas commonly cited in the literature.
