Lower extremity compartment syndrome is a devastating complication if not rapidly diagnosed and properly managed. The classic symptoms of compartment syndrome can be deceiving as they occur late. Any concern for compartment syndrome based on mechanism, or the presence of pain in the affected extremity, should prompt a compartment pressure check. Both absolute compartment pressures above 30 mm H...

A compartment syndrome is an orthopaedic emergency which can result from a variety of causes, the most common being trauma. Rarely, it can develop spontaneously and several aetiologies for spontaneous compartment syndrome have been described. We describe a patient with diabetes who developed a spontaneous compartment syndrome. The diagnosis was delayed because of the atypical presentation.

Chronic exertional compartment syndrome is a relatively common, but often overlooked cause of leg pain in athletes. A careful history and physical examination is essential in the diagnosis of CECS. Affected individuals have recurrent, activity-related leg pain that recurs at a consistent duration or intensity and is only relieved by rest. Measurement of baseline and postexercise compartment pre...

Acute compartment syndrome remains a challenging problem for orthopedic surgeons because its diagnosis is not always straightforward and it has a high risk of associated limb morbidity if left undiagnosed or untreated. Failure to diagnose and treat acute compartment syndrome is one of the most common causes of successful medical liability claims. The authors review the current literature concer...

Acute compartment syndrome consists of increased tissue pressure in a closed anatomical area leading to decreased vascular perfusion. It is frequently caused by trauma, fractures, or compression injuries1-16 and usually occurs in the forearm or lower leg. Reports of acute compartment syndrome of the thigh, especially without an associated fracture, are rare.1,2,4,5,10,11,14 This article present...

Compartment syndrome is a clinical condition associated with decreased blood circulation that can lead to swelling of tissue in limited space. Several factors including lithotomy position, prolonged surgery, intermittent pneumatic compressor, and reperfusion after treatment of arterial thrombosis may contribute to compartment syndrome. However, compartment syndrome rarely occurs after gynecolog...

Compartment syndrome is a well described limb-threatening and potentially life-threatening condition. Compartment syndromes of the upper and lower limbs are well documented in the literature. The gluteal region, however, is often not considered as a compartment despite having three osseofascial boundaries. We report a case of gluteal compartment syndrome which resulted from a bone marrow biopsy...

Compartment syndrome of the foot is usually associated with trauma, and if untreated may result in deformity and loss of function. We report a case of spontaneous compartment syndrome of the foot presenting with severe unremitting pain. The diagnosis was supported by measurements of compartment pressures and the symptoms resolved after surgical decompression. Spontaneous compartment syndrome in...

A systematic review of the literature on gluteal compartment syndrome was performed using Medline Ovid and PubMed search engines. Publications were included if they described the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and functional outcome of this syndrome. Seven articles with a total of 28 cases met the eligibility criteria, all of which were retrospective case studies. The most common cause of glutea...
