We study numerically the strong coupling limit of lattice QCD with one flavor of massless staggered quarks. We determine the complete phase diagram as a function of temperature and chemical potential, including a tricritical point. We clarify the nature of the low temperature dense phase, which is strongly bound "nuclear" matter. This strong binding is explained by the nuclear potential, which ...

It was established that at low temperatures, quantum oscillations of a pair of interacting nanoscale structural inhomogeneities (vertical Bloch lines) occur in a domain wall of stripe domain in uniaxial ferromagnetic film. The effective mass of vertical Bloch line and conditions for this effect were determined. The effect can be used in the hybrid storage devices bit + q-bit.

At low temperature, a quasi-one-dimensional ensemble of atoms with an attractive interaction forms a bright soliton. When exposed to a weak and smooth external potential, the shape of the soliton is hardly modified, but its center-of-mass motion is affected. We show that in a spatially correlated disordered potential, the quantum motion of a bright soliton displays Anderson localization. The lo...

This article provides data on the static behavior of reinforced concrete at room and low temperature including, strength, ductility, and crack widths of the reinforced concrete. The experimental data on the application of digital image correlation (DIC) or particle image velocimetry (PIV) in measuring crack widths and the accuracy and precision of DIC/PIV method with temperature variations when...

We investigate the phase diagram of S=1 quantum spin systems with SU(2)-invariant interactions, at low temperatures and in three spatial dimensions. Symmetry breaking and the nature of extremal states can be studied using random loop representations. The latter confirm the occurrence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic transitions and the breaking of SU(3) invariance. And they reveal the peculiar n...

The antiferromagnetic Ising model in small-world networks generated from two-dimensional regular lattices has been studied. The disorder introduced by long-range connections causes frustration, which gives rise to a spin-glass phase at low temperature. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to study the paramagnetic to spin-glass transition, as a function of the rewiring probability p , ...

Observing antiferromagnetic correlations in ultracold fermions on optical lattices is an important step towards quantum simulation of the repulsive Hubbard model. We show that optical lattice modulation spectroscopy can be used to detect antiferromagnetic order and probe the nature of quasiparticle excitations in a fermionic Mott insulator. At high temperatures, the rate of creation of double o...

We investigate the quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices under gravity in the "Wannier-Stark localization" regime and "Landau-Zener tunneling" regime. Our results agree with experimental data [B. P. Anderson et al., Science 282, 1686 (1998); F. S. Cataliotti et al., Science 293, 843 (2001)]. We obtain the total decay rate which is valid over the entire range of temp...

Psychrophiles thrive permanently in the various cold environments on Earth. Their unsuspected ability to remain metabolically active in the most extreme low temperature conditions provides insights into a possible cold step in the origin of life. More specifically, metabolically active psychrophilic bacteria have been observed at -20 °C in the ice eutectic phase (i.e., the liquid veins between ...
