Ciprofloxacin is the most commonly used fluoroquinolone. Ciprofloxacin is prescribed for 1 in 44 Americans. Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic, effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, being especially active against the Enterobacteriacae, including many microorganisms resistant to penicillins, cephalosporins and aminoglycosides, and also is effect...

background brain abscess is an infrequent complication of meningitis, including cases caused by gram-negative enteric bacteria and klebsiella in neonates. brain abscess in neonates associated with high morbidity and mortality.recently, incidence of the disease is increasing because of increased predisposing factors. patients and method three cases of brain abscess in neonates are reported, 2 of...

A carbapenem-resistant Citrobacter freundii strain WCHCF65 was recovered from hospital sewage and was characterized by genome sequencing and conjugation experiments. The strain carried nine genes encoding β-lactamases including two carbapenemase genes, blaNDM-1 and blaKPC-2. blaNDM-1 was carried on an IncX3 plasmid, which was identical to a plasmid found in a local Escherichia coli, suggesting ...

Citrobacter rodentium is a Gram-negative bacterium which causes transmissible murine colonic hyperplasia and models the virulence of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli in vivo. Thus, C. rodentium is used to study human gastrointestinal disease. We present the draft genome sequence of C. rodentium strain ATCC 51459, also known as DBS100.

Ten quinolone-resistant mutants of Citrobacter freundii, which were selected in vitro with fluoroquinolones from two clinical isolates, were studied. The parent isolates were susceptible to quinolones in spite of showing a single substitution in the GyrB (His-417 --> Leu). No change was observed in the outer membrane proteins or in the lipopolysaccharide in any of the ten mutants studied with r...

The phenomenon of molecular mimicry was found previously for Citrobacter braakii O37, which shared epitopes with human and horse erythrocytes. The aim of this study was to elucidate the basis of the serological cross-reactivity between anti-C. braakii O37 serum and human erythrocytes. The experiments involved analyzing the epitope on the human erythrocyte membrane, that could be recognized by a...

The Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) was detected in carbapenem-resistant isolates of Citrobacter freundii and Klebsiella oxytoca recovered from different patients in a Michigan hospital. Restriction analysis and hybridization with a KPC-specific probe showed the bla(KPC-2) genes of these two genera of the family Enterobacteriaceae are carried on a common plasmid.
