BACKGROUND B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia is a clinically heterogeneous disease; some patients rapidly progress and die within a few years of diagnosis, whereas others have a long life expectancy with minimal or no treatment. Telomere length and telomerase levels have been proposed as prognostic factors; however, very few cases have been characterized for both parameters and no study has a...

INTRODUCTION Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is an indolent disease that often presents with complaints of lymphadenopathy or is detected as an incidental laboratory finding. It is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with tamponade or a large, bloody pericardial effusion. In patients without known cancer, a large, bloody pericardial effusion raises the possibilit...

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a malignancy of B CD5+cells and is the most common type of leukemia in adults. The disease is more common in men over 50 years in western countries. CLL is associated with defective apoptosis in B cells. CLL was traditionally regarded as a disease that occurs before naïve B cells meet the antigen in the lymph nodes. Laboratory diagnosis requires white blood...

A 52-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) entered the hospital because of repetitive bouts of massive hemoptysis requiring a right pneumonectomy. A bronchus intermedius-pulmonary artery fistula was found and felt to be due to necrosis of a peribronchial lymph node which was infiltrated by chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells. This represents another pulmonary complication in the c...

Our understanding of the genetic basis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia is only just starting to be recognized. This perspective article by Drs. Crowther-Swanepoel and Houlston provides an up-to-date review the molecular epidemiology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with emphasis on the integration of biology and genomics.

Mucopolysaccharide sulfation was demonstrated in leukemic granulocytic precursors in short-term suspension culture by incorporation of SO4 into a compound identified chromatographically as chondroitin sulfate. The gel filtration pattern of sulfated mucopolysaccharide obtained from leukemic leukocytes was qualitatively similar to that found with normal granulocytic precursors. Sulfation of mucop...

We report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia with a characteristic cytogenetics finding detected by fluorescent in situ hybridization. This case has deletion in p53 gene in 50% of interphase nuclei studied in the peripheral blood and polyploidy in 30% of cells. To our knowledge polyploidy is not commonly reported with chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients.

abstract objective fever and neutropenia are a common complication of chemotherapy in cancer. it is usually managed by hospitalization and empiric administration of antibiotics. use of fluroquinolones is limited because of joint/cartilage toxicity. this study attempted to compare the efficacy of oral ciprofloxacin with intravenous ceftazidim in low risk febrile neutropenic lymphocytic leukemia....

BACKGROUND Signaling through the B-cell receptor appears to be a major contributor to the pathogenesis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Toll-like receptors bridge the innate and adaptive immune responses by acting as co-stimulatory signals for B cells. The available data on the expression of Toll-like receptors in chronic lymphocytic leukemia are limited and derive from small series of patients...
