A boy was born to a mother who was a chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier. She was hepatitis Be (HBe) antibody positive and HBe antigen and HBV-DNA negative. The boy had not received hepatitis B vaccine and died from fulminant hepatitis at 3 months of age. This case demonstrates the need to vaccinate babies of HBe antibody positive, HBe antigen negative carriers.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) was transmitted from a chronic carrier to his female partner during unprotected anal and vaginal intercourse. Based on HVR1 and phylogenetic tree analysis, the couple had closely related isolates. These findings confirm sexual transmission of HCV without other risk factors.
the aim of the present study was to prepare new cluster (b6c4si) as an antibiotic carrier. density functional theory (dft) method at the b3lyp level of theory in conjugate with the 6-311g** basis set was used to evaluate the interaction between b6c4si cluster and penicillin. binding parameters, homo, lumo and homo- lumo gap were calculated. results show the b6c4si homo–lumo gap value of 0.13...
background: salmonella is one of the major causes of human diseases related to food consumption. salmonella typhi and s. para-typhi are causes of typhoidal and para-typhoidal infections. some infected individuals recovering from this infection become temporary or permanent carriers, harboring the organisms in the gallbladder, biliary tract, or rarely in their intestines. the aims of this study ...
Chronic exposure of β-cells to metabolic stresses impairs their function and potentially induces apoptosis. Mitochondria play a central role in coupling glucose metabolism to insulin secretion. However, little is known on mitochondrial responses to specific stresses; i.e. low versus high glucose, saturated versus unsaturated fatty acids, or oxidative stress. INS-1E cells were exposed for 3 days...
background: methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (mrsa) is a common major human pathogen that causes hospital-acquired infections. characterization and typing of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome has led to a better understanding of mrsa infection cycle in hospital. the meca-associated hypervariable region size classifies mrsa isolates that colonized in nasal carriers. objectives: t...
Subramanya SB, Subramanian VS, Said HM. Chronic alcohol consumption and intestinal thiamin absorption: effects on physiological and molecular parameters of the uptake process. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 299: G23–G31, 2010. First published May 6, 2010; doi:10.1152/ajpgi.00132.2010.—Thiamin is essential for normal cellular functions, and its deficiency leads to a variety of clinical ...
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most common chronic viral infections in the world. Iran has a low to intermediate HBV prevalence and approximately 1.5 million people are living with HBV infection. The impact of HBV in Iran is unknown and given the very low levels of alcohol consumption, this region provides an opportunity to examine the impact of isolated chronic HBV infection....
conclusions these findings indicated the association of the hbsag titer and serum ifnar2 in hbsag clearance in hepatitis b virus- infected patients. in consequence, immune mechanisms related to ifn-α/β signaling might be responsible in chb outcome. background loss of hepatitis b surface antigen (hbsag) in chronic hepatitis b (chb) infection is a favorable outcome. type i interferon (ifni) has a...
background staphylococcus aureus (sa) is frequently found on normal human skin and mucous membranes. methicilline resistance s. aureus (mrsa) strains have spread in many hospital isolates world wide since 1970s. hospital personnel tend to have higher colonization rates than the general population. colonized residents and personnel are sources for dissemination of organism. materials and methods...
