A label-free colorimetric method to detect nucleic acids, which relies on target DNA induced shielding of the oxidase activity of CeO2 NPs, is developed. With this novel strategy, target nucleic acids can be identified within a few minutes and without the need for post-purification of PCR products.

The aim of this project was to compare cerium oxide and silver particles of different sizes for their potential for uptake by aquatic species, human exposure via ingestion of contaminated food sources and to assess their resultant toxicity. The results demonstrate the potential for uptake of nano and larger particles by fish via the gastrointestinal tract, and by human intestinal epithelial cel...

Cerium oxide (CeO2) or ceria has been shown to be an interesting support material for noble metals in catalysts designed for emission control, mainly due to its oxygen storage capacity. Ceria nanoparticles were prepared by precipitation method. The precursor materials used in this research were cerium nitrate hexahydrate (as a basic material), potassium carbonate and potassium hydroxide (as pre...

To evaluate the significance of thin-film composite membrane surface morphology on water productivity, flat-sheet experiments were conducted with silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, and cerium dioxide nanoparticles. The polyamide thin-film active layer exhibited a valley and ridge morphology that was directly related to the surface roughness, and was found to contribute to particle accumulation ...

The effect of the calcination conditions on the catalytic activity for N2O decomposition of 2.5% RhOx/CeO2 catalysts has been investigated. Ramp and flash calcinations have been studied (starting calcinations at 25 or 250/350 °C, respectively) both for cerium nitrate and ceria-impregnated rhodium nitrate decomposition. The cerium nitrate calcination ramp has neither an effect on the physico-che...

Traditional nanostructured design of cerium oxide catalysts typically focuses on their shape, size, and elemental composition. We report a different approach to enhance the catalytic activity of cerium oxide nanostructures through engineering high density of oxygen vacancy defects in these catalysts without dopants. The defect engineering was accomplished by a low pressure thermal activation pr...

nanostructured ceo2 powders were synthesized via a series of hydrothermal and solution precipitation methods. three different hydrothermal methods including 1:2 and 1:1 bi:ce molar ratios at 180 °c for 48 h (s1 and s2, respectively) without calcinations and 2:1 bi:ce molar ratio at 180 °c for 48 h with calcinations (s3) were performed successfully for the synthesis of the target nanomaterials. ...
