Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)/ceria composite fibres were synthesized by using a sequential combination of polymer electrospinning, spray-coating with a sol, and a final calcination step to yield microstructured ceria tubes, which are composed of nanocrystalline ceria particles. The PMMA template is removed from the organic/inorganic hybrid material by radio frequency (rf) plasma etching follow...

Ceria-titania solutions with compositions of Ce0.9Ti0.1O2 and Ce0.8Ti0.2O2 were prepared by the citric-acid (Pechini) method and characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD) for structure, coulometric titration for redox thermodynamics, and water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction rates. Following calcination at 973 K, XRD suggests that the mixed oxides exist as single-phase, fluorite structures, although...

Human peripheral blood cells are relevant ex vivo models for characterizing diseases and evaluating the pharmacological effects of therapeutic interventions, as they provide a close reflection of an individual pathophysiological state. In this work, a new approach to evaluate the impact of nanoparticles on the three main fractions of human peripheral blood cells by nuclear magnetic resonance sp...

Ceria (CeO₂) nanoparticles have been widely studied for numerous applications, but only a few recent studies have investigated their potential applications in medicine. Moreover, there have been almost no studies focusing on their possible antibacterial properties, despite the fact that such nanoparticles may reduce reactive oxygen species. In this study, we coated CeO₂ nanoparticles with dextr...

This paper introduces a new synthesis procedure to form erbium-doped ceria nanoparticles (EDC NPs) that can act as an optical medium for both up-conversion and down-conversion in the same time. This synthesis process results qualitatively in a high concentration of Ce(3+) ions required to obtain high fluorescence efficiency in the down-conversion process. Simultaneously, the synthesized nanopar...

This Perspective covers sustainable oxidation processes using doped cerias, ceria-supported catalysts and ceria-based mixed oxides. Firstly, we consider the general properties of ceria-based catalysts. We outline the advantages of the ceria redox cycle, and explain the dynamic behaviour of these catalysts in the presence of metal additives and dopants. We then review three types of catalytic ox...

The present paper demonstrates that inorganic ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles effectively inhibit anomalous oxidative damage of DNA induced by ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. To utilize the CeO2 nanoparticles for the protection test of DNA, a colloidal solution of monodispersed and crystallized CeO2 nanoparticles is synthesized through a photochemical reaction of Ce(NO3)3 solution, followed by d...

Flowerlike CeO2 coated with Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5Ox (Sr-Fe-Mo-oxide) nanoparticles exhibits enhanced conductivity at low temperatures (300-600 °C), e.g. 0.12 S cm(-1) at 600 °C, this is comparable to pure ceria (0.1 S cm(-1) at 800 °C). Advanced single layer fuel cell was constructed using the flowerlike CeO2/Sr-Fe-Mo-oxide layer attached to a Ni-foam layer coated with the conducting transition metal o...

Early indicators for nanoparticle-derived adverse health effects should provide a relative measure for cytotoxicity of nanomaterials in comparison to existing toxicological data. We have therefore evaluated a human mesothelioma and a rodent fibroblast cell line for in vitro cytotoxicity tests using seven industrially important nanoparticles. Their response in terms of metabolic activity and cel...

The effect of surface Mo on the water-gas-shift (WGS) activity of Pd/ceria was studied. A series of 1-wt% Pd catalysts, with varying Mo content, were prepared from supports obtained by aqueous impregnation of (NH4)2MoO4 onto ceria. Rates were found to decrease linearly with Mo coverage up to 1.8 Mo/nm2 and were 10% of that on Pd/ceria after the addition of this amount of Mo. TPD studies with 2-...
