Shock is a pathological condition characterized by imbalance between oxygen demand and supply. Irrespective of the cause, shock leads to state energy failure due decrease in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, creation lactic acidosis, as consequence, multiple organ dysfunction [1].
Because atrioventricular block can cause cardiovascular collapse, the rapid management of this condition is necessary. An 82-year-old man complained of discomfort after tooth extraction, and electrocardiography showed second- and third-degree atrioventricular blocks. Dentists should monitor patients who report discomfort using electrocardiography because of the possibility of life-threatening a...
We describe the successful resuscitation of a parturient who developed cardiovascular collapse immediately after cesarean delivery most likely due to amniotic fluid embolism, based on the clinical presentation and later confirmed by exclusion. Aggressive therapy was instituted right away including early administration of vasopressin. Care continued in a critical care setting and she recovered c...
Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare and often fatal complication that occurs in the peripartum period. We present a patient with an AFE who developed disseminated intravascular coagulation and cardiovascular collapse who may have benefitted from intravascular lipid emulsion rescue. This is the first published case in which lipid emulsion was a part of the successful treatment of AFE.
Although supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is usually well tolerated in most infants and older children, it can lead to cardiovascular collapse in some infants. We present one neonate in whom venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) was used to support for life-threatening cardiogenic shock secondary to intractable SVT. ECMO facilitated myocardial recovery and subsequently an...
Cardiovascular collapse due to pulmonary hyperinflation was noted in a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease following median sternotomy for cardiac surgery. Treatment included bronchodilator therapy to reduce airway obstruction, limitation of minute ventilation, and increasing time available for exhalation. High inspiratory flow rates and expiratory retard may be beneficial.
Fifty percent of trauma patients who present sepsis-like syndrome do not have bacterial infections. This condition is known as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). A unifying factor of SIRS and sepsis is cardiovascular collapse. Trauma and severe blood loss cause the release of endogenous molecules known as damage-associated molecular patterns. Mitochondrial N-formyl peptides (F-MIT)...
Massive pulmonary embolism associated with total cardiovascular collapse occurred during the surgical repair of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm with an aortocaval fistula. Pulmonary artery pressure monitoring permitted immediate diagnosis whereas central venous pressures did not reflect the obstruction to right ventricular outflow. Pulmonary embolectomy without cardiopulmonary bypass was p...
