BACKGROUND The ability of the Candida species to colonize surfaces can be considered as a risk factor for oral infection. AIMS To establish oral Candida carriage in patients attending a dental clinic in Braga, Portugal. METHODS A total of 97 patients were analysed. Swab samples were collected and directly cultured onto CHROMagar Candida. Representative yeasts were identified by polymerase c...

The dimorphic transition of Candida albicans from the yeast (Y-Candida) to the hyphal (H-Candida) form is a complex event; the relevance of this transition in fungal pathogenicity is still poorly understood. By using a cloned macrophage cell line (ANA-1), we questioned whether the interaction between macrophages and Y-Candida or H-Candida could affect specific cell functions, i.e., tumor necros...

Fluconazole disk-diffusion susceptibility was evaluated in 230 blood isolates and 344 non-blood clinical isolates of Candida spp. collected in 2002 at National Taiwan University Hospital. Up to 93.5% of blood isolates were susceptible to fluconazole, 3% were susceptible dose-dependent, and 3.5% were resistant. The minimum inhibitory concentrations at which 50% of tested isolates were inhibited ...

Background. Opportunistic fungal infections like candidiasis are common in the oral cavity. In recent years Candida species have shown resistance against a number of synthetic drugs. This study assessed the antifungal activity of Centratherum anthelminticum and Ocimum sanctum seed oils against six common pathogenic Candida strains. Synergistic activity of the major oil components was also studi...

We measured time-kills and postantifungal effects (PAFEs) of caspofungin against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. glabrata isolates. One-hour exposure to caspofungin during PAFE experiments accounted for the majority of killing during time-kill experiments. Regrowth of all isolates was inhibited for at least 24 h following drug washout.

Background and Aims: Candida species are opportunistic pathogens which live as benign commensal organisms in the oral cavities. The infants are more susceptible to opportunistic microorganism colonization. This study was design to evaluate the presence and quantity of Candida colonies in infants' oral cavities and its relation with age, gender, and type of diet and mothers' education level.Mate...

OBJECTIVE Fungal urinary tract infections due to Candida have increased significantly in recent years. Our research objective was to study Candida species in urine samples of patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) associated with obstructive uropathy and to investigate the virulence factors of the isolated Candida. METHODS Patients were divided into two groups: Group I (cases): 50 pati...

Organic apple cider vinegar is produced from apples that go through very restricted treatment in orchard. During the first stage of the process, the sugars from apples are fermented by yeasts to cider. The produced ethanol is used as a substrate by acetic acid bacteria in a second separated bioprocess. In both, the organic and conventional apple cider vinegars the ethanol oxidation to acetic ac...

Seventy five patients with oral lesions attending the different departments of Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital, Annamalai University were screened for Candida. Forty six (61.3%) Candida strains were isolated from the oral lesions. Of the 46 Candida strains, Candida albicans accounted for 35 (76.08%), Candida glabrata for 5 (10.86%), Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei for 2 (4.34%)...

AIM To evaluate the antifungal effect of gallic acid, catechin, luteolin and quercetin, phenolic compounds identified from flowers of North Eastern Portugal, against Candida planktonic and biofilm cells. MATERIALS & METHODS The MICs were determined in Candida planktonic cells and the effect of phenolic compounds on Candida biofilms was assessed through quantification of colony-forming units. ...
