Calcified broad ligament leiomyoma is a rare benign lesion in postmenopausal age group. It causes diagnostic confusion with solid calcified adnexal mass and large bladder calculi at the pelvic region. Clinical and radiological diagnoses were confirmed by histopathology of the hysterectomy specimen. We hereby present a case of heavily calcified broad ligament fibroid in a postmenopausal woman.
BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of coronary artery disease (CAD). There is increasing recognition that lesion composition rather than size determines the acute complications of atherosclerotic disease. Low serum adiponectin levels were reported to be associated with coronary artery disease and future incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The impact of adiponectin on lesion...
The aim of the present research is to determine the influence of the calcification of human mitral valves on the mechanical properties of their marginal chordae tendineae. The study was performed on marginal chords obtained from thirteen human mitral valves, explanted at surgery, including six non-calcified, four moderately calcified and three strongly calcified valves. The mechanical response ...
The optimal surgical procedure for patients with calcified and organized chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH), or "armoured brain", has not been established because it is difficult to obtain good re-expansion of the brain after surgery. We present herein the case of a 32-year-old woman with huge calcified CSDH manifesting as refractory headache, periods of unconsciousness, and unsteady gait who ob...
A 72-year-old man with a heavily calcified coronary lesion underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using a third-generation drug-eluting stent (DES) with thin stent struts. Two months after the PCI, in-stent restenosis due to stent recoil (SR) occurred. An intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) revealed deformed stent struts and heavily calcified coronary plaque. The SR probably occurred du...
Intracranial calcifications may represent calcified cerebral emboli. Calcified emboli may be overlooked even though cerebral CT is widely used as a stroke assessment. We report 4 cases of calcified cerebral emboli and demonstrate the value of CT in the diagnosis and temporal evaluation of such emboli.
Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is one ultrasonic imaging technology to acquire vascular cross-sectional images for the visualization of the inner vessel structure. This technique has been widely used for the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery diseases. The detection of the calcified plaque with acoustic shadowing in IVUS images plays a vital role in the quantitative analysis of atherom...
BACKGROUND Among patients with pulmonary disease due to Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) seen recently at our center, a substantial number have had extensive calcified mediastinal, hilar, and peribronchial lymphadenopathy, a finding historically inconsistent with pulmonary MAC disease. METHOD We retrospectively studied the frequency of calcified lymphadenopathy in the chest and prevalence of...
We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a scoring balloon catheter in expanding a circumferentially calcified lesion compared to a conventional balloon catheter using an in vitro experiment setting and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this ability using a finite element analysis. True efficacy of the scoring device and the underlying mechanisms for heavily calcified coronary lesions ...
