Candida species other than Candida albicans frequently cause nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients. Some of these pathogens have either variable susceptibility patterns or intrinsic resistance against common azoles. The availability of a rapid and reproducible susceptibility-testing method is likely to help in the selection of an appropriate regimen for therapy. A flow cytometry (...

OBJECTIVES To determine the quantitative differences in telithromycin and azithromycin MIC values against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pyogenes obtained using two recommended and commonly used methodologies: CLSI reference standard broth microdilution in ambient air and Etest((R)) concentration gradient in CO(2). METHODS Four hundred clinical isolates (S....

Echinocandins are a group of antifungal agents that target 1,3-beta-glucan synthase, causing disruption of mold growth at cells compromising tips and branch points. In part because echinocandins do not induce clear growth inhibition end points using broth dilution techniques, methods to test susceptibility have not yet been standardized. We developed a novel susceptibility assay that measures g...

The objective of this study was to investigate an apparent increase in linezolid-nonsusceptible staphylococci and enterococci following a laboratory change in antimicrobial susceptibility testing from disk diffusion to an automated susceptibility testing system. Isolates with nonsusceptible results (n = 27) from Vitek2 were subjected to a battery of confirmatory testing which included disk diff...

We compared the E test with a broth microdilution method, performed according to National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards document M27-A guidelines, for determining the in vitro susceptibilities of 90 isolates of pathogenic molds (10 Absidia corymbifera, 10 Aspergillus flavus, 10 Aspergillus fumigatus, 10 Aspergillus niger, 10 Aspergillus terreus, 10 Exophiala dermatitidis, 10 Fusar...

Vancomycin MICs for Staphylococcus aureus isolates in a pediatric hospital with a high rate of staphylococcal infections were examined for any increase over a 7-year period. A broth microdilution scheme allowed direct comparison of the MICs generated by this method to MICs generated by Etest. MICs generated by both methods were determined with the same inoculum suspension. One hundred sixty-fiv...

The effect of the two antibiotics ceftazidime and meropenem on a collection of 46 Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates representing clinical and environmental sources across northern Australia was investigated by using a series of in vitro test methods. The susceptibility testing methods used included Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion, Etest MIC, broth microdilution MIC, and a modification of the microd...

abstract         background and objective: one of the main tasks of clinical microbiology laboratories is to determine antibiotic resistance profiles in common pathogens and ensure the selection of effective antibiotics for certain infections. the aim of this study was to compare the methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified hodge test in escherichia coli isolates from urinary...

We studied six methods for preparation of inoculum to use in susceptibility tests of anaerobic bacteria to determine viable counts of 15 different species of anaerobes. We counted viable bacteria for each method-organism combination. Methods studied included those used for the more routine tests (broth microdilution and broth-disk elution) and for the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory ...

The in vitro activity of LY303366, a new echinocandin derivative, was evaluated with 191 yeast isolates by a broth microdilution method. The MICs at which 50% of the isolates were inhibited were 0.125 microg/ml for Candida albicans and C. tropicalis, 0.25 microg/ml for C. krusei, C. kefyr, and C. glabrata, and 2.0 microg/ml for C. parapsilosis.
