Spinal epidural abscess accompanies blood-borne infection, vertebral osteomyelitis, or an overlying cutaneous source of infection. This report documents the development of non-infective epidural abscess where the inflammatory response was induced by the highly irritant contents (keratin and cholesterol) of an underlying epidermoid. This was associated with aseptic meningitis.

HIV infection has attained extraordinary attention among surgeons and other health care workers as a potential source of occupational infection. Disease is usually blood-borne and transmissible, and due to the nature of surgical work, surgical community has become involved and is developing sterile surgical barriers, and improved surgical techniques and procedures.

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease that ranges in severity from asymptomatic infection to fatal sepsis. Ehrlichiosis acquired from transfusion of blood products has not been documented in the literature to date. A case of Ehrlichia ewingii infection likely transmitted by transfusion of leukoreduced platelets is described, and public health implications are discussed.
