A new method is presented for examining the spatial attributes of a sound recorded within a room. A binaural recording is converted into a running representation of instantaneous lateral angle. This conversion is performed in a way that is influenced strongly by the workings of the human auditory system. Auditory onset detection takes place alongside the lateral angle conversion. These routines...

A simple model is presented for synthesizing binaural sound from a monaural source. The model produces vertical as well as horizontal and externalization effects. The simplicity of the model permits efficient implementation, allowing for realtime multisource operation. Additionally, the parameters in the model can be adjusted to fit a particular individual's characteristics.

Hearing impaired individuals often have difficulty hearing in noise because of reduced spectral resolution. Previous research suggests that dichotic processing, where information from neighboring frequency regions is sent to opposite ears, may benefit those individuals. However, dichotic processing can degrade binaural cues, reducing spatial release from masking and localization accuracy. In th...

Databases of head related impulse responses (HRIRs) for binaural synthesis can be measured either in anechoic or reflective environments. The time until energy decays to negligible values after impulsive excitation ranges from some milliseconds under anechoic conditions to some seconds in reflective environments. The computational load for dynamic binaural synthesis increases significantly with...

The main idea of binaural technique is to reproduce the complete auditive experience of a human listener. In theory, this is achieved by recording and reproducing the two signals at the listener’s left and right eardrum. In binaural technology, first steps were made in the 1880s especially in the field of recordings. Over the decades this technology has evolved significantly. However, some chal...

Intelligibility of speech in noise becomes lower as the listeners age increases, even when no apparent hearing impairment is present. The losses are, however, different depending on the nature of the noise and the characteristics of the voice. In this paper we investigate the effect that age, noise type and speaking style have on the intelligibility of speech reproduced by car loudspeakers. Usi...

This paper presents evaluation results of parametric auralization system. The auralization method, based on imagesource and edge diffraction modeling, is briefly overviewed and evaluation of the auralization quality is performed both subjectively and objectively. As a case study the auralization of a lecture room is considered with three different musical stimuli. The evaluation results show th...

This is a tutorial paper giving an introduction to the perception of multichannel sound reproduction. The important underlying psychoacoustic phenomena are reviewed – starting with the behaviour of the auditory periphery and moving on through binaural perception, central binaural phenomena and cognition. The author highlights the way the perception of a recording can be changed according to the...

In this paper, we compare the impact of monophonic, stereophonic, and binaural human speech recordings in terms of their ability to induce the feeling of presence and influence the understanding of the emotional state the speakers were in. These factors are generally important in entertainment applications, for example when conversing with a non-player character or in mediated synchronous human...

This article presents an overview of the problems involved in modeling the phase in analysis/synthesis of voiced sounds. A number of informal experiments for monaural sounds are presented, demonstrating the problems and possible improvements to these kinds of systems. Furthermore, a number of psycho-acoustic experiments are presented, for assessing the importance of phase information regarding ...
