Seat belt legislation appears to have reduced mortality from, and the incidence of, serious head and facial injuries due to motor vehicle accidents. The use of seat belts has, however, also modified injury patterns in car occupants involved in accidents. This review traces the introduction of seat belt legislation and delineates the types of injury which have been attributed to seat belt wearing.

The deployment of debris in equatorial orbits would be an effi cient and cost-effective countenneasure to the establishment of or bital weapons platfonns. The presence of orbital debris would force the building of orbital platfonns to build and maintain mas sive shielding to protect the platfonns. The cost ratio between at tacking a system of orbital structures with a debris belt and defend...

A test program was conducted to determine the effectiveness of a seat belt restraint in preventing occupant movement in a rollover accident. A baseline type-2 seat belt (pelvic and torso restraint), and an improved type-2 seat belt restraint, both designed to restrict occupant motion in a rollover accident, were tested in a rollover restraints tester (RRT). Each seat belt was placed on a H-III ...

The behaviour of a viscous thread as it falls onto a moving belt is analysed in the asymptotic limit of a slender thread. While the bending resistance of a slender thread is small, its effects are dynamically important near the contact point with the belt, where it changes the curvature and orientation of the thread. Steady flows are shown to fall into one of three distinct regimes, depending o...

The present study was designed to investigate body position changes resulting from wearing a Rematee Bumper Belt (Rematee, Canada) during sleep. The majority of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients will experience up to two times as many apneas and hypopneas while supine relative to lateral or prone body positions during sleep. It has been suggested that a positional therapy device could redu...

To address deficiencies in the process of fault diagnosis of belt conveyor, this study uses a BP neural network algorithm combined with fuzzy theory to provide an intelligent fault diagnosis method for belt conveyor and to establish a BP neural network fault diagnosis model with a predictive function. Matlab is used to simulate the fuzzy BP neural network fault diagnosis of the belt conveyor. R...

A new belt transmission mechanism, having the function of no-slip driving, is described in the paper. It is composed of pulleys with carved rails and belt with rolled pins spaced out on both sides. Firstly, the trajectory curve is deduced along which pins embedded in the pulley. And then, parametric relationships are established, which are about center offsets of two pulleys, working radius of ...

Although the effectiveness of automobile safety belts in reducing risk of serious injury in traffic crashes is well documented, safety belt use in many U.S. jurisdictions remains low. Michigan's mandatory safety belt law for front-seat occupants, implemented in July 1985, is one of 34 similar laws in the United States intended to increase belt use and reduce crash-related injuries. Using time-s...

Spinal loading during weightlifting results in a loss of stature which has been attributed to a decrease in height of the intervertebral discs--so-called 'spinal shrinkage'. Belts are often used during the lifting of heavy weights, purportedly to support, stabilize and thereby attenuate the load on the spine. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a standard weightlifting belt ...

We present the results of radio searches for pulsars within unidentified EGRET source error boxes. Using the Parkes multibeam system, we have surveyed 56 sources at Galactic latitudes |b| > 5◦ which do not appear to be associated with blazars. This population has been suggested to be distributed like the local star forming region known as the Gould Belt, the Galactic Halo, and/or the millisecon...
