The presence of Paramecium sexaurelia from the Paramecium aurelia complex was recorded for the first time in China (Beijing). RAPD fingerprints (band patterns) of P. sexaurelia strains, the new strain from China and others from Asia, as well as from Europe and Puerto Rico, showed polymorphism within the species as several groups of genotypes characterized by different band patterns.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis of the Bejing subtype (MtbB) is transmitted efficiently in high burden countries for this genotype. A higher virulence was associated with isolates of the "modern" Beijing genotype sub-lineages when compared to "ancient" ones. Here, we report the full genomes of the strain representing these two genotypes from Brazil, a country with a low incidence of MtbB.

Using geographic information system and molecular tools, we characterized a possible outbreak of tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing strain in 17 patients in Cotonou, Benin, during July 2005-October 2006. Most patients lived or worked in the same area and frequented the same local drinking bar. The isolates were streptomycin resistant.
