The objective of this work is to interpret inductive results obtained by the unsupervised learning method OSHAM. We briefly introduce the learning process of OSHAM, that extracts concept hierarchies from unlabelled data, based on a representation combining the classical, prototype and exemplar views on concepts. The interpretive process is considered as an intrinsic part in OSHAM and is carried...

We report means for simplifying case instances in a case-based reasoning system for criminal summary judgments in Taiwan. We merge similar case instances, remove irrelevant terms, and weight important terms. The best method combination reduces the size of the case database by more than 60% of the most complete case database while maintaining the classification quality at about 80%.

Stories can be powerful argumentative vehicles, and they are often used in arguments from analogy, most notably as parables or allegories where the story illustrates an important claim of the argument. Case Based Reasoning in Law has many similar features. In this article, we want to take a further step at computationally modelling the connection between stories and argumentation in analogical ...

Since clinical management of patients and clinical research are essentially time-oriented endeavours, reasoning about time has recently become a hot topic in medical informatics. Here we present a method for prognosis of temporal courses, which combines temporal abstractions with Case-based Reasoning. The method was originally generated for multiparametric time course prognosis of the kidney fu...

Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), which provides a foundation for a new technology of intelligent computer systems that can solve problems and adapt to new situations, is the process of solving new problems based on the solutions of similar past problems. In the present paper we give a fuzzy representation of a CBR system and we use the total possibilistic uncertainty as a measure of its effectivenes...

Integrating multiple reasoning mode is useful in complex domains like the game of Go. Go players use various forms of reasoning during a game. Reasoning at the tactical level is completely different from reasoning at the strategic level. Choosing a plan requires a different form of reasoning than knowing how to execute a plan. This paper gives examples of the integration of these reasoning mode...

This paper presents GENA, a case-based reasoning system capable of generating audio-visual narratives by drawing from previously annotated content. Broadcast networks spend a large amount of resources in covering many events and many different types of audiences. However, it is not reasonable for them to cover smaller events or audiences, for which the cost would be greater than the potential b...

Researchers who build autonomous agents are primarily interested in integrating the aspects of agency which were once thought decomposable and independent. A theory of agency for everyday worlds must address the problems that an agent has a limited time to plan, and that an agent must be able to cope with an incomplete domain physics. The Case-based Agency projects at the AI Lab at the Universi...

A challenge for any case-based reasoning system is how to acquire the cases with which to reason. Here we explore acquiring cases via natural language instruction by a person. We show how, using microstories (1-3 sentence stories) expressed in simplified English syntax, small cases – called common sense units – can be incrementally added to improve analogical reasoning performance.
