We describe a theoretical study of the role of adsorbate interactions in island nucleation and growth, using Ag/Pt(111) heteroepitaxy as an example. From density-functional theory, we obtain the substrate-mediated Ag adatom pair interaction and we find that, past the short range, a repulsive ring is formed about the adatoms. The magnitude of the repulsion is comparable to the diffusion barrier....

UNLABELLED In a survey of the polychaetes of the Lizard Island region, sixteen new species of terebellids, plus one previously described species, were found from material collected during the two week long Lizard Island Taxonomic Workshop in 2013, along with material collected from previous projects carried out at Lizard Island. This included the CReefs Project (http://www. AIMS gov.au/creefs...

We investigate a time-dependent circular billiard with a two-frequency driving function and derive a new simplified form for the map, which is a symplectic nontwist map. Stability boundaries and reconnection thresholds are derived for fixed points and period-two vortex pairs. An island interspersal condition is derived such that neighboring island chains of the first frequency are exactly separ...

Mass bleaching of shallow-water corals was observed at Lizard Island and at other locations on the Great Barrier Reef in early 1982. In a patch-reef community at Lizard Island, mortality rates of scleractinian corals from 4 families were higher during the period of bleaching than during the previous year. It is postulated that bleaching may be the result of penetration of high levels of UV radi...

The brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis), accidently introduced to the previously snake-free U.S. island of Guam after World War 11, decimated the island's naive wildlife. Today, it periodically stows away on craft going to other islands where the ecological damage may be repeated. Barriers offer an effective tool for keeping the snakes out of areas from which they can disperse off-island, as we...

Barrier islands are a primary coastal defense and often experience erosion during storms. When they fail due to storm-induced breaching, there can be significant changes the small- large-scale hydrodynamics morphodynamics of region. In this study, we explore formation breach on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, Isabel (2003) subsequent flooding into Pamlico Sound. Two-way coupling high-fidelity,...
