Autoclaving of crude oil is often used to evaluate the hydrocarbon-degrading abilities of bacteria. This may be potentially useful for bioaugmentation and microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). However, it is not entirely clear if "endogenous" bacteria (e.g., spores) in/on crude oil survive the autoclaving process, or influence subsequent evaluation of the hydrocarbon-degradation abilities of ...

Heat treatment of soybean meal (SBM) is necessary to reduce the concentration of trypsin inhibitors, but excessive heat treatment may reduce AA concentration and digestibility because AA can be destroyed by the Maillard reaction. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of heat treatment of SBM on apparent ileal digestibility and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA...

Dilute formaldehyde was the most suitable treatment to inhibit sediment bacteria, since bacterial activity remained low during long-term incubations and the chemical changes in the sediment were minimal. The inhibiting effects of HgCl(2), autoclaving, and gamma radiation were diminished during longer incubations; these treatments also caused increases in dissolved nutrients.

As a means of decontaminating instruments possibly exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the World Health Organization has recommended immersion and autoclaving in sodium hydroxide. However, this recommendation has raised concerns of possible damage to autoclaves, and hazards to operators as a result of the caustic vapors. A series of experiments has been conducted that demonstrate that there a...

Three liquid media that differ slightly in composition but not in the method of preparation were developed for the propagation of Treponema hyodysenteriae and Treponema innocens. The three media are unique in that all components are sterilized by autoclaving before use. These media supported better growth of T. hyodysenteriae than did previously used liquid media.
