argumentation frameworks [Dun95] take a very simple view on argumentation as they do not presuppose any internal structure of an argument. Abstract argumentation frameworks only consider the interactions of arguments by means of an attack relation between arguments. Definition 1 (Abstract Argumentation Framework). An abstract argumentation framework AF is a tuple AF = (Arg,→) where Arg is a set...

We present a general formal argumentation system for dealing with the detachment of conditional obligations. Given a set of facts, constraints, and conditional obligations, we answer the question whether an unconditional obligation is detachable by considering reasons for and against its detachment. For the evaluation of arguments in favor of detaching obligations we use a Dung-style argumentat...

In the current paper, we re-examine the connection between abstract argumentation and assumption-based argumentation. These two formalisms are often claimed to be equivalent in the sense that (a) evaluating an assumption based argumentation framework directly with the dedicated semantics, and (b) first constructing the corresponding abstract argumentation framework and then applying the corresp...

During the last years, argumentation has been gaining increasing interest in modeling different reasoning tasks of an agent. Many recent works have acknowledged the importance of incorporating preferences or priorities in argumentation. However, relatively little is known about the theoretical and computational implications of preferences in argumentation. In this paper we introduce and study a...

Recently resolution of attacks has been studied in the context of abstract argumentation frameworks. In this paper it is claimed that resolutions should be studied under the assumption that they are generated through the acquisition of preference information, and that this implies that the existing study of resolutions has limited applicability. A formalisation of preference-based resolutions i...

In this talk I will provide an overview of Computational Argumentation, focusing on two wellknown and widely used approaches, namely abstract argumentation and assumption-based argumentation, and their possible uses in Web contexts, and in particular the Semantic Web and Social Networks. For both forms of Computational Argumentation, I will outline potential extensions required to meet the chal...

My thesis focuses on using argumentation to model common-sense reasoning with preferences. I have equipped a structured argumentation formalism, Assumption-Based Argumentation, with a preference handling mechanism. I aim to advance the newly proposed formalism, called ABA+, present its place among other argumentation formalisms and discuss various properties of ABA+.
