Sci-fi narratives permeating the collective consciousness endow AI Rebellion with ample negative connotations. However, for AI agents, as for humans, attitudes of protest, objection, and rejection have many potential benefits in support of ethics, safety, self-actualization, solidarity, and social justice, and are necessary in a wide variety of contexts. We launch a conversation on constructive...
Th is summarizes the fu l l report (Jon Doyle, "T ru th Maintenance Systems for Problem Solving," M I T AI Lab TR419) which describes progress that has been made in the abil i ty of a computer system to understand and reason about its own reasoning faculties. A new method for representing knowledge about beliefs has been developed. This representation, called a non-monotonic dependency system, ...
In this article, I explore narrative building blocks for future-oriented what-if (i.e., possibilities-generating) analysis developed in a health promotion study. The aim of this study was to gain insight into future possibilities for good health among participants known for their poor health status. In narrative inquiry, imagining future possibilities and prospective temporal orientation are se...
As a visual artist undertaking doctoral studies in education, the author required a research method that integrated her studio practice into her research process, giving equal weight to the visual and the linguistic. Her process of finding such a method is outlined in this article, which touches on arts-based research and practice-led research, and her ultimate approach of choice, collage. Coll...

Using an adequate representation is often the key to solve complex problems in Artificial Intelligence. Hierarchical shape representations are very convenient in domains -such as vision-based roboticsthat require a trade-off between efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, we present new techniques and results concerning a hierarchical shape representation based only on spheres. We focus on the ...
In this paper we discuss how a motivationally autonomous robot, designed using the principles of embodied AI, provides a suitable approach to address individual differences of children interacting with a robot, without having to explicitly modify the system. We do this in the context of two pilot studies using Robin, a robot to support selfconfidence in diabetic children.
Inside the Juror (Hastie 1994) was, in a sense, a point of arrival for research developing formalisms that describe judicial decision making. Meter-based models of various kinds were mature, and even ready for giving way to such models that would concern themselves with the narrative content of the cases at hand, that a court is called to decide upon. Moreover, excessive emphasis was placed on ...
