The diagnosis of appendicitis in infancy is very difficult to make and is thus usually delayed causing complications such as perforation and abscess formation as well as prolonged hospital stays. Though appendicitis in infants and toddlers is a rare happening, it should nevertheless be overseen in children presenting with colicky pain, vomiting (and/or diarrhea), and fever. Delayed diagnosis is...

UNLABELLED Three imaging modalities are available for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis: ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Transabdominal ultrasound should be the first-line imaging test. Abdominal CT is superior to US and is required immediately in patients with atypical clinical presentation of appendicitis and suspected perforation. However, l...

Appendicitis is said to be uncommon and difficult to diagnose in cystic fibrosis. The clinical and radiological features in nine patients with cystic fibrosis who had appendicitis were studied. All but one of the patients had an appendiceal abscess at surgery. Four patients had a delay in diagnosis of greater than three days before the correct diagnosis was made. This delay may have been due to...

Appendiceal tumours are uncommon but may be present in 0.9-1.4% of all appendicectomy specimens. While carcinoid tumours and adenocarcinomas comprise the majority of appendiceal tumours, rarely, lymphomas or sarcomas may also present in the appendix. Appendiceal leiomyosarcomas are rare, and to date, only a handful of cases have been reported. The current paper presents a case of giant appendic...

CONTEXT The rates of appendiceal rupture and negative appendectomy in children remain high despite efforts to reduce them. Both outcomes are used as measures of hospital quality. Little is known about the factors that influence these rates. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between hospital- and patient-level characteristics and the rates of appendiceal rupture and negative appendectom...

Appendiceal anomalies are extremely rare malformations. We presented the case of a patient 43-year-old who had undergone emergency surgery for bowel occlusion. Incidentally we have found an "horseshoe-shaped" appendix which removed. After review of the literature we have introduced this appendiceal variant in a complete classification of appendiceal anomalies.

MATERIAL AND METHODS In a historic cohort study with 27 cases of appendiceal diverticulitis and 54 cases of acute appendicitis, we compared clinical characteristics, diagnostic tests and pathology findings of the two processes. RESULTS Mean age...

Appendiceal tumors are rare, late diagnosed neoplasms that may not be differentiated from adnexal masses even by advanced imaging methods and other diagnostic procedures. They may be asymptomatic and remain undiagnosed until surgery. We report a case of an 80-year-old postmenopausal woman presenting with a pelvic mass and a history of weight loss. The patient underwent laparotomy which revealed...
