BACKGROUND Sutureless aortic valves were introduced to facilitate minimally invasive aortic valve surgery. Since sutureless aortic valves are a feasible procedure, we evaluated if any benefits could be identified in severe high-risk patients with active infective endocarditis of the aortic valve. MATERIAL AND METHODS Between April 2014 and April 2015, a total of 42 patients received a sutureles...

A 40-year-old man was admitted with a diagnosis of MRSA aortic valve endocarditis. He was treated conservatively with clindamycin and vancomycin for three days, but embolism occurred into the brain and the right lower limb, and urgent aortic valve replacement was performed. Resecting an aortic annular abscess resulted in a huge defect of the root. The defect was reconstructed with a combined pa...

We provide the first evidence that Bartonella quintana can infect dogs and cause typical signs of endocarditis. Using PCR and sequencing, we identified B. quintana in the blood of a dog from the United States with aortic valve endocarditis and probably also in the mitral valve of a dog from New Zealand with endocarditis.

OBJECTIVE The early and late results of infective endocarditis (IE) with annular involvement were studied by focusing on surgical findings and operative procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifteen adult patients with a mean age of 56 years were reviewed. Eight had native valve endocarditis (NVE), and 7 had prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). The diseased valve was mitral in 6 patients, aortic ...

A review of 28 necropsy cases of infective endocarditis seen over the 12-month period of I969 is presented. The infection involved a previously apparently normal valve in I6 cases (57%). Isolated aortic valve endocarditis was the commonest lesion and wasfound in i5 cases. Infective endocarditis of the aortic valve characteristically occurred on a nornal valve in middle-aged men. In the IO cases...

A 57 year old white man with aortic insufficiency and previously undiagnosed ankylosing spondylitis, who developed subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE), is described. Emergency aortic valve replacement was necessary, and the aortic valve pathology showed diffusely fibrosed and thickened valve leaflets with bacterial vegetations. This is the first recorded case of SBE in ankylosing spondylitis.

Occurrence of acute aortic dissection after aortic valve replacement is rare, however, it is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. We report two Asian cases in which acute aortic dissection occurred after urgent aortic valve replacement for infective endocarditis. Successful graft replacement was carried out with preservation of the prosthetic valves in both cases. Our experience ...

BACKGROUND Secondary involvement of the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa and the anterior mitral leaflet (subaortic structures) can occur in patients with aortic valve endocarditis. The secondary involvement of these structures occurs as a result of direct extension of the infection from the aortic valve or as a result of an infected aortic regurgitant jet striking the ventricular surfaces o...

We describe a case of Gemella bergeriae endocarditis in a patient with a bicuspid aortic valve. Diagnosis was confirmed by sequencing of 16S rRNA genes in heart valve tissue. This is the first report of Gemella endocarditis confirmed by molecular detection of bacterial genes in heart valve tissue.
