A new {Fe(NO)(2)}(10) dinitrosyl iron complex possessing a 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligand has been prepared. This complex exhibits dioxygenase activity, converting NO to nitrate (NO(3)(-)) anions. During the oxygenation reaction, formation of reactive nitrating species is implicated, as shown in the effective o-nitration with a phenolic substrate.

In the title mol-ecular salt, (C(13)H(22)N)[FeCl(4)], three of the chloride ions of the tetra-hedral Fe(III)-containing anion are disordered over two orientations in a 0.656 (11):0.344 (11) ratio. In the crystal, there are no identifiable directional inter-actions between cations and anions except for Coulombic forces.

The title compound, [Ga(H(2)O)(6)](NO(3))(3)·3H(2)O, is isostructural to other known M(III) nitrate hydrates (M = Al, Cr, Fe). The structure contains two distinct octa-hedral Ga(OH(2))(6) units (each of symmetry) which are involved in inter-molecular hydrogen bonding with the three nitrate anions and three water mol-ecules within the asymmetric unit.

Imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) exhibited a dramatic acceleration effect on the electron transfer from metal complexes such as (C(5)Me(5))(2)Fe(II) and (C(5)Me(5))(2)Co(II) to the oxygen molecule; this acceleration effect can be ascribed to the stabilization of the oxygen radical anions by coordinating with the acidic C2-H of imidazolium ILs.
