In this Quick Guide, Johnson introduces the reader to carrion flowers, which evolved to mimic rotting flesh. This adaptation attracts insects that facilitate pollination.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of direct and indirect monitoring on generosity among five-year-old preschoolers and to reveal the primary motivation for their generosity. Forty-two preschoolers completed one-shot dictator games in Condition 1 while being monitored by the experimenter (the direct monitoring condition). In Condition 2, an image of staring eyes was displayed on...
THE BATTLE FOR INFANT LIFE. To assist the Infants' Hospital, Vincent Square, in its battle for infant life, Princess Mary, its President, paid a visit on April 14 to inaugurate the pound scheme, which is an appeal to the nation for money for the general extension of the hospital, greater facilities for research, and many other improvements of which this excellent and progressive institution sta...
The flower-visiting behaviors of pollinator species are affected not only by flower traits but also by cues of predators and resident pollinators. There is extensive research into the effects of predator cues and resident pollinators on the flower-visiting behaviors of bee pollinators. However, there is relatively little research into their effects on butterfly pollinators probably because of t...
The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate a single-layer garment that incorporates different textiles to improve the physiological comfort of backpackers hiking in cold weather conditions. The objectives are to identify comfort needs, to design a prototype shirt, and to evaluate comfort and performance of the prototype over time, in comparison to a control. Qualitative data were colle...
Recent developments and needs in materials used for personal protective equipment and their testing.
The field of personal protective equipment (PPE) has led to several high technology innovations. Indeed, improved protection against the various possible encountered risks is looked for, in particular at the workplace. This has generated the development of new materials and new manufacturing technologies, as well as the introduction of new applications for existing ones. However, the remaining ...
Bees from the Zemmgrund area in the Zillertal Alps (Austria, Tyrol) were collected and determined to investigate the species composition of the area. A total of 61 specimens were collected over a two year period; they represent 24 species from 8 genera. Building on these records, the first commented checklist for the area is presented, with notes on habitats and visited flowers.
Cotton is traditionally the most important natural fibre in the apparel industry because of the comfortable wearing comfort and durability of cotton textiles. The chemical finishing of cotton aims to further improve the quality of the cotton fibre, either to overcome some disadvantages of the apparel or to establish additional desirable properties. This paper highlights some current trends in c...
Following the theme of this special issue, two new compounds, the P-flowers C(16)(PH)(8) and C(16)(PF)(8), are designed by us and subsequently characterized by quantum chemical computations. Their geometries and infrared signatures are analyzed and compared to those of the well-known sulflower C(16)S(8). Their electronic structure and aromaticity are examined using the electron localization fun...
Water-repellent, self-cleaning and stain resistant textiles are of interest for industrial applications. Anthraquinone reactive dyes were covalently grafted onto cotton fabric surfaces obtaining bright colors with good wash-fastness properties and giving rise to breathable superhydrophobic textiles with self-cleaning properties.
