In recent years, there have been major advances in the development of new and more powerful perception systems for agriculture, such as computer-vision and global positioning systems. Due to these advances, the automation of agricultural tasks has received an important stimulus, especially in the area of selective weed control where high precision is essential for the proper use of resources an...

The quality of education being delivered is a critical issue in American society. Teachers who are satisfied with their work and have a strong sense of purpose tend to have programs which produce successful students. Researchers have found that the quality of education being delivered is a function of the teacher’s level of of job satisfaction (Bowen, 1981) and degree of teacher effectiveness (...

Analysis of functional genomics (transcriptomics and proteomics) datasets is hindered in agricultural species because agricultural genome sequences have relatively poor structural and functional annotation. To facilitate systems biology in these species we have established the curated, web-accessible, public resource 'AgBase' (www.agbase.msstate.edu). We have improved the structural annotation ...

Private landowners are often de facto stewards of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, ranchers frequently present the only defense against biological invasions in private rangelands. Although ranchers’ land management goals (e.g., the desire to control invasive species) can be consistent with ecosystem protection, practical constraints often limit their...

The working paper publication series is designed to provide users with timely research results while refinements and longer term synthesis are completed, and final reports are available. The preparation of working papers and their discussion with those who design and influence programs and policies in Mozambique is an important step in the Directorates's overall analysis and planning mission. C...

Burning agricultural straw before and/or after harvest is a common farming practice. Regional and extensive agricultural open field straw burning can cause serious air pollution events. This paper looks at the effects of biomass burning emission on regional haze that should be considered in the forecasting of regional haze. It describes the current state of crop residue burning in China, and an...

Feeding a growing world population amidst climate change requires optimizing the reliability, resource use, and environmental impacts of food production. One way to assist in achieving these goals is to integrate beneficial plant microbiomes-i.e., those enhancing plant growth, nutrient use efficiency, abiotic stress tolerance, and disease resistance-into agricultural production. This integratio...

The current applications of geographic information systems (GIS) applications to non-point-source pollution modeling for agricultural area are reviewed with respect to the requirements for GIS, the hydrological/water quality modeling processes, and integration between GIS and Non-Point-Source Pollution (NPSP) models. Some necessary considerations for future studies are also discussed by summari...

To augment capacity-building for microbiome and probiotic research in Africa, a workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya, at which researchers discussed human, animal, insect, and agricultural microbiome and probiotics/prebiotics topics. Five recommendations were made to promote future basic and translational research that benefits Africans.

The study of allelopathy has a long history, and its application to agricultural production has long been anticipated. Recently, researchers have found allelopathic plants that are now used as cover crops, and allelochemicals which may lead to new herbicides. This paper reviews three studies introduced in this symposium, and discusses the possible application of allelopathy to agriculture.
