Multi-valued partial CFL functions are computed by one-way nondeterministic pushdown automata equipped with write-only output tapes. We give an answer to a fundamental question, raised by Konstantinidis, Santean, and Yu [Act. Inform. 43 (2007) 395–417], of whether all multi-valued partial CFL functions can be refined by single-valued partial CFL functions. We negatively solve this question by p...

The decomposition of almost fully reacted (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (BSCCO-2223) tapes caused by heating in 1 atm of pure O2 at 825 C has been studied. It was found that partially decomposing 2223 tapes to a mixture of Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Oy, (Ca,Sr)2PbO4, and other secondary phases reduced the critical current density (77 K, 0 T) from ~20 kA/cm to nearly zero. Reheating the tapes in 7.5% O2 restored the 222...

External sorting methods which are designed to order large amounts of data stored in persistent memory are well known for decades. These methods were originally designed for systems with small amount of operating (internal) memory and magnetic tapes used as external memory. Data on magnetic tapes has to be accessed in strictly serial manner and this limitation shaped the external sorting algori...

Observers watched videotaped face-to-face mother–infant and stranger–infant interactions of 12 infants at 2, 4, or 6 months of age. Half of the observers saw each mother paired with her own infant and another infant of the same age (mother tapes) and half saw each infant paired with his or her mother and with a stranger (infant tapes). Observers were asked to judge which was the mother–infant d...

One of the results of the theater was a flurry of requests to obtain one or more of the tapes, for study, or to show to colleagues or students. In response to those requests, Sally Morton has organized the Statistical Graphics Video Library. It is currently composed of the material that has appeared in the video show, but over time will pick up new contributions. The library also serves as an a...

I assume that most students have encountered Turing machines before. (Students who have not may want to look at Sipser’s book [3].) A Turing machine is defined by an integer k ≥ 1, a finite set of states Q, an alphabet Γ, and a transition function δ : Q×Γk → Q×Γk−1×{L, S,R}k where: • k is the number of (infinite, one-dimensional) tapes used by the machine. In the general case we have k ≥ 3 and ...

LTCC technology is based on sintering of multi-layered thick-film sheets (50-250μm) or so-called green tapes, which are screen-printed with thick-film pastes such as conductors, resistors, etc. The terms low temperature and co-fired originate from the relatively low sintering temperatures (<900°C) compared to conventional ceramics and simultaneous firing of tapes together with screen-printed th...

A problem of self-referential paradox and self-reproduction is discussed in a network model of machines and tapes. A tape consists of a bit string, encoding function of a machine. Tapes are replicated when it is attached by an adequate machine. Generally, a tape is replicated but it may be di erent from the original one. In this paper, external noise evolves diversity in a system. New reaction ...

When Richard Drew of 3M developed creped paper masking tape in 1925, he began a revolutionary change in the way we live. From that first step, taking us from the over a century-old cloth backed pressure sensitive tape for surgical use to the many and varied industrial tapes which followed Richard Drew’s masking tape, it changed how we make things and how we do things. It is used in the manufact...
