Our Chandra X-ray observation of the globular cluster 47 Tuc clearly detected most of the 16 MSPs with precise radio positions, and indicates probable X-ray emission from the remainder. The MSPs are soft (BB kT ∼0.2-0.3 keV) and faint (LX ∼ few 10 30 ergs s), and generally consistent with thermal emission from small polar caps. An additional 40 soft X-ray sources are consistent with the known M...
Context. The six known highly dispersed fast radio bursts are attributed to extragalactic radio sources, of unknown origin but extremely energetic. We propose here a new explanation – not requiring an extreme release of energy – involving a body (planet, asteroid, white dwarf) orbiting an extragalactic pulsar. Aims. We investigate a theory of radio waves associated to such pulsar-orbiting bodie...
Title of Dissertation : ALLOSTERY AND GROEL: EXPLORING THE TENETS OF NESTED COOPERATIVITY Jennifer Suzanne Gresham, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation Directed By: Professor George H. Lorimer Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Despite a wealth of structural and biochemical studies on the functional cycle of the E. coli chaperonins GroEL and GroES, no model proposed to date accounts f...
Spectrum imaging (SI) methods are displacing traditional spot analyses as the predominant paradigm for spectroscopic analysis with electron beam instrumentation. The multivariate nature of SI provides clear advantages for qualitative analysis of multiphase specimens relative to traditional gray-scale images acquired with non-spectroscopic signals, where different phases with similar average ato...
We report on new pulsars discovered in Arecibo drift-scan data. Processing of 2200 deg of data has resulted in the detection of 41 known and 12 new pulsars. New pulsars include two millisecond pulsars, one solitary and one binary recycled pulsar, and one pulsar with very unusual pulse profile morphology and complex drifting subpulse behavior. In McLaughlin et al. (2003) we describe the data col...
This article reviews different methods used to perform quantitative X-ray microanalysis in the electron microscope and also demonstrates the urgency of measuring the fundamental parameters of X-ray generation for the development of accurate standardless quantitative methods. Using ratios of characteristic lines acquired on the same X-ray spectrum, it is shown that the Cliff and Lorimer K ...
We have searched 92 unidentified sources from the FIRST and NVSS radio catalogs for pulsations at 610 MHz. The selected sources are bright, have no identifications, are unresolved and have significant linear polarization. Our search was sensitive to sub-millisecond pulsations from pulsars with a large range of dispersion measures. We have detected no radio pulsations from these sources and conc...
To study the structure of emission beam, we have analysed the single pulse data of PSR B0329+54 at 325 and 606 MHz. In order to unambiguously detect the weak emission components, we have developed a new data analysis technique, which we term “window–thresholding”. By applying this technique to the data, we have detected three new emission components, and also confirmed the presence of a compone...
